England v Brazil - yawn (merged)

For my two-pence worth, I think the antagonism felt towards England is based on the fact that our players are some of the most highly-paid (& market-valued) on the planet, yet perform like pub footballers in virtually every major tournament they have reached since 1996.

Surely we should be more annoyed at whoever is paying them so much, rather than the players themselves? No player is going to turn down high wages. Why are they so highly paid?

I don't always want to be an England fan, but it definitely doesn't feel like a choice to me. Also I do quite enjoy watching all the youngsters coming through.

I can understand apathy towards England per se, but there's a world of difference playing a friendly against Brazil and, say, Sweden who we play all the time and who are boring as f***.

Understand your overall point but any game featuring ZLATAN IBRAHIMOVIC is worth watching.

As long as that absolutely shit England Band are at England matches, i will never watch/attend an England game.

It was difficult to even listen to the game at the weekend because of that shitty band.

They believe a lot of their own hype as well.

Witness the huge raft of autobiographies after the 2006 World Cup, mainly moaning about how "unlucky" we were, when in fact we were SHIT.

Did they actually say we were unlucky?

Lampard did, big time.

Kept moaning about he wished "lady luck would piss off and take her ugly twin sister with her" or something.

Joey Barton summarised the whole 2006 debacle beautifully.....

"England did nothing in that World Cup, so why were they bringing books out? 'We got beat in the quarter-finals. I played like shit. Here's my book'."

Exactly.

The irony here is that the CLUBS pay the vast wages, and their England appearance fees go to charity! So how does that impact what we think of them when they wear an England shirt?? If someone offers you a ridiculous salary you would of course take it - and so what?!

Spot on. Always find it bizarre when people have a go at someone FOR BEING OVERPAID. Of course they're going to take the f***ing money! Be annoyed at the person overpaying them!

I’ve never been particularly arsed about England matches, particularly friendlies. It’s not a case of railing against the high earnings, nor am I trying to disassociate myself from any traces of jingoism. It’s not even about avoiding the most annoying band in the world, or the incessant Carling adverts.

It’s just that it doesn’t stir me in anything like the same way as watching the Albion. I might catch the highlights, will definitely read about it the next day, but won’t care about the result at all.

I LOVE the World Cup and Euros, but again am really not arsed about how England do in it, in anything remotely like the way I care about our results.

No offense to anyone who loves it – it’s just not for me.

True-ish.

If you heard of a plumber being paid absolutely top of the market prices by SOMEONE ELSE, despite the fact that plumber was totally and utterly incompetent, wouldn't you think...... what a dick.

It just doesn't endear me to them.

They are highly paid and highly regarded (in terms of market value), yet when they turn up for England..... they are horrendous. It aggravates me.

Normally friendlies I can take or leave.....but this is Brazil !.. We have world class opponents apparently fielding a strong team . That makes it worth watching.

In the past we did think too much of ourselves. It is better to be realistic. We have little chance of winning tonight and even less of winning the World Cup. Our Premier League is chock full of foreign players and we split British football into four National teams.

But no matter, England are my team - I follow them. It is not patriotism, just football.

Seriously, why are ITV bigging this game up? Does anyone really give a f*** about this game? I'd honestly MUCH rather watch Coronation Street.

Does this mean I just never watch ITV? I've not seen a single ad for it, and had assumed it was on Sky.

I'm not bothered about the game, but I'll watch it if it's on.

I have never ever heard a plumber talk about himself in the third-person though.
