I wasn't present at any of the hustings so can't comment personally, but I read several papers over the last couple of days and the overwhelming impression is that it was Ed's presentation skills wot won it. He was being compared to Tony Blair and David Cameron in his ability to make someone feel that he/she was being addressed to personally. So Ed's personal charm and presentation skills was given as the reason for David's lead evaporating.

It started off like a rather poor best man's speech. Even talking about childhood adventures with his brother. Built up well at the end however. Jury's still out: but what's with the music....

I'm not sure he's leader material, but he did something I've never noticed another politician do.

Whilst debating on C4 news with two environmental campaigners, one of them asked him what he would do about a particular problem, and he genuinely said back to him "what would you do ?" - that is rare, a politician really wanting to know what someone else thought.

yes, same here. but the opinion prior to the contest was D Miliband was better on presentation and if after its recognised he gives a better image to the wider electorate (quite imporant on winning elections). his speech on Monday was supposed to have been excellent. seems maybe a bit of complacency set in on the campaign?

and union support swinging the vote for Ed was really what won it.

The union support was individual members voting - not that it would be obvious from some of the press coverage. Trade Unions still remain the biggest voluntary organisations in the country and the support of levy paying members is probably what scares tax dodging foreign media owners hence the "Red Ed" bollocks.
