The union support was individual members voting - not that it would be obvious from some of the press coverage. Trade Unions still remain the biggest voluntary organisations in the country and the support of levy paying members is probably what scares tax dodging foreign media owners hence the "Red Ed" bollocks.
Agreed.

Predictably, there was absolutely disgraceful coverage from the Standard following his election. They insisted he had to prove he wasn't a union yes man. Erm, why? I don't recall the Standard saying that Cameron had to prove he wasn't in the pockets of big business after he was elected Tory leader.

Actually what EM does have to prove is that he can be trusted with the keys to the country, because most of us don't give a f*** which block of votes got him elected as leader.

of course. the 10% of members that bothered to vote in one union so i hear. Or have they got rid of the block vote and only those that participated count?

I listened to it in the car. Routine. Not inspiring. Unconvincing attempts to have a go at Cameron. A few poor jokes.

New speechwriters and more presentation training needed methinks.

I like the way everyone expects these speeches to be rousing and entertaining, that's how the likes of HITLER got into power.

HITLER.

They should be dull and boring, as poltics generally is, but with sensible content about how to fix the country up and ting.

indeed.

time will tell but elections are for those in power to lose rather than for the opposition to win

It should also be pointed out that best speakers rarely are winners. If you look at the best orators over the past 30 years or so, Michael Foot, Tony Benn, Neil Kinnock, Michael Heseltine and Enoch Powell are the names that would spring to mind - only Hezza could possibly be described as a total political success.

What about Obama?

I was thinking about the UK.

The US has had Reagan, Clinton and Obama - all brilliant orators, with differing styles.

For some reason, we're more suspicious of them (although you could say Blair succeeded, although I always found him a bit phoney). We didn't used to be: Lloyd George and Churchill did all right.

I wasn't present at any of the hustings so can't comment personally, but I read several papers over the last couple of days and the overwhelming impression is that it was Ed's presentation skills wot won it. He was being compared to Tony Blair and David Cameron in his ability to make someone feel that he/she was being addressed to personally. So Ed's personal charm and presentation skills was given as the reason for David's lead evaporating.

Like Gordon was.....till he got he in the car.

Union yes man trying to blame others for the cock up his party committed. All very dull and hopefully the general public will see right through him

doubt that they have not seen through SHAMERON

Spare a thought for the "forgotten" Milliband brother. A little known fact is that Ed and David have a (much older) brother. Famous in his own write he is overlooked as he moved to the USA at an early age, cutting all ties with his roots, in order to follow his love of music (particularly the blues and rock) and the guitar. He has been successfully making music and having hits over 5 decades, indeed he has recently released a critically acclaimed album of blues covers. His name?

Steve Milliband :)
