The whole point of a protest is to cause disruption, surely?

Can you imagine where our club would be if all our protests at the Goldstone were in the club approved protest area ™ as we didn’t want to upset the away fans who’d travelled all the way down to Brighton? :lolol:
protested on the pitch, outside the ground and directors homes. dont recall anyone gluing or otherwise blocking Western rd? you dont win over people inconveniencing them. right to protest doesnt trump others rights to go about their business.

there is a place for raising awareness, but these issues are already very high profile. basically these protesters are getting the rocks off on "doing something" for the sake of it. without any kind of impact on the targets, unless the general public is the target. and if it is, they arent happy. even those who'd be supportive of their cause.

because its oil painting right?

love it if the gallery just left them there, call it performance art and see how long until they plead to be released.
That's a great idea. Leave them glued where they are till they are hungry and wet themselves (or worse!).

The so called Eco protesters are mainly a bunch of socialist types who have probably never done a days work in their lives . They should be locked up for causing people unnecessary delays especially to important things like hospital appts etc . I have no sympathy for them at all

Emily Davidson (spelling) chucking herself in front of the kings horse to protest women not having the vote, must have been very inconvenient.

When there are major problems not being dealt with, protests like this will arise as sure as night follows day. They are just mere symptoms of the great climate disaster we are hurtling head-first into, no more no less, and picking apart their arguments, whether they will achieve their aims or not, and how we can legislate against them as if THEY are the problem, is by and large irrelevant.
the major problems are being addressed. you probably dont think quickly enough, may be so. though as these are such major problems they need addressing at a larger level, political party and general politics. it does need legislation, and some honesty on what changes mean. no more holidays or travel, no more avacados or cat poo coffee. not fannying about with milk in Waitrose or gluing to a road. we're being told there's possibly electric cuts for a few hours this winter, in the future they will be standard if we cut all fossils as things stand. i'd rather see some campaigns about the changes.

More like middle class privileged types who have lived their comfortable lives free from prejudice and discrimination which is why they are so confident they won't experience any Police or judicial heavy handedness/retribution.

Can you imagine the Police/judges response if the perpetrators had been council estate residents/ethnic minority or football supporters vandalising works of art/high end shops blocking major roads for their self defined worthy cause?

The major problems really aren’t being addressed. As long as profit trumps climate, it shall remain so.

If indeed that's what she was doing. She had a return ticket and she left no suicide note - there's a fair chance she was just trying to pin a ribbon on the horse's tack as it galloped by.

Anyway, the eventual winner is probably the only Derby winner to be eaten by humans. It weas exported to Russia and disappeared without trace during the revolution.

Brilliant protest, it shows me that most people are more interested in an old oil stained rag than the planet they live on. Further, that objects have more value than people. Maybe some older posters don't get that younger people might think and act differently. It's part of a process called progress.
So using that argument, knock down all the old buildings that are not eco friendly….all those pesky cathedrals that cost a fortune to heat and light……what about football grounds? no more night games, and all kick offs in the mornings…..no more away fans at games as the carbon footprint of moving thousands of fans on trains, planes and automobiles is unsustainable.

no more international matches as far too eco unfriendly!

but no…throw some baked beans at a painting.

young protesters…you are all pussies!

Nope, Brighton fans have never protested in roads. Never.

Any Brighton fan who is against protests because they’re disruptive is either a bit dim or in denial.

The only difference between what Just Stop Oil are doing and what Brighton fans did is you’re 30 years older and your football club isn’t at risk.

Protests are supposed to be disruptive, it really is that simple.

about a year ago people were implying it was not sensible to increase the money spent on home insulation as they were already insulated ok yet here we are with bills that are double or triple what they were and still going up. I do think the protestors are shooting themselves in the foot with some of their protests but the message then and now is correct we need to accelerate improvements that reduce our energy consumption before it's too late.

there are ways to protest without encroaching on other's rights. one person's claims to rights doesnt supercede others, you need balance and tradeoffs
Like disrupting football matches, snapping crossbars etc?

The major problems really aren’t being addressed. As long as profit trumps climate,

I don't think many would disagree with wanting to save the planet and reduce consumption.

But the way they go about it is all wrong. It's just gross expecting other people to have to clear up their pi$$ and sh1t after them. Alienating the public like this is not the way to protest or get support. They are using bullying, harrassment and aggression rather than trying to gain consensus and agreement.

They take it out on the general public, rather than the main perpetrators, who are :
  • Manufacturers (who think that buying 'carbon credits' mean they can then do whatever they want)
  • Marketing departments, whose job is to make people overconsume
  • China, making cheap tat
  • Instagram, platform for over-consumption and showing off
  • Chemical and plastic manufacturers, who don't care where their products end up or which wildlife gets killed
  • Governments, just interested in lining their pockets
Protestors' actions are causing waste - wasted time, wasted effort, loss of earnings. Like the milk protestors, they come across as entitled, like they have never had to struggle to earn a living. No-one who has ever struggled to make ends meet would tip all that milk on the floor.
I don't believe they take it out on the public...what they do is for publicity, whether it's paint at a gallery or paint on a bank in the city. They want people to wake up. Power to the protesters... they will be on the right side of history, for as long as there is history

I think you have to look at these protests as symptoms of the bigger problem. Its easy to look at these protests as ridiculous, alienating, disruptive and not going to achieve their aims, and all that is probably true. But this story isn't really about the protests themselves, as if they've come out of nowhere, it is the result of governments not doing enough to solve the issues and a populace not tuned in enough, or just too selfish, to demand better from the manufacturers, resource-extractors, media and governments that create the problems.

The environment and our society may well, in the end, collapse in a heap, but I like to think we won't all sit at home twiddling our thumbs until the day of reckoning. These protests are the tip of the iceberg, it will only increase.
Well said 👍

Good point well made.
