[Football] Dunk for England??

Rather than hating all things Brighton, maybe Southgate thinks Dunk isn’t up to international level yet ?

Southgate is a blazer who wouldn't be considered for a job at any club in the top divisions of Europe. He is just continuing the England way of picking anyone in a top six squad and making up the space with players who have been in the England set up since their seventh birthday.

Any successful manager would pick a way of playing and choose players who can follow this philosophy, but he, like manager after manager just picks whoever the press say are best and tries to force them all into one team. It never works and it won't work again. McLaren 2.0 will soon be out on his backside and the FA will be swinging back to a big name foreign manager and massively overpaying him. I bet they've already got Arsene's number just in case. He would also ignore Dunk and Ben Mee despite the fact that they may be the nearest he could currently get to the Adams and Keown partnership that gave him virtually the only successful defence he had in two decades.

The hernia problem might explain why Tarkowski's form dipped so much in the final 5 games (10 goals conceded compared to 29 in the previous 33 games). Probably would not have been playing had Ben Mee not missed the last 7 games with a shin injury. I suspect both would have been playing if we'd been fighting relegation.

Cannot believe Tom Cairney's claim that, at Jokanovic's request, he played the second half of the season with a "bad" knee injury. I wonder if any long-term damage has been done for short-term gain (Fulham promotion at the expense of damaging/shortening Cairney's career).

Steven Defour had to make a big decision in January - play on with a troublesome cartilage problem and risk more serious long-term damage or have an immediate operation which meant missing the last 14 games of the season and almost certain selection for Belgium's World Cup squad.

After a talk with Dyche and a top knee specialist, Defour chose to have the op and hopes it will prolong his career.

So in summary, you think he should be in the squad ?
I personally think he would struggle in the England formation, with the wing backs pushing on.
Against world class opposition, his frailties would be exposed, and his constant last ditch tackles would result with a red card or two.
He can developed his game by playing in the PL against the best, but he isn’t ready yet.

Phil Jones has been embarassing himself against the 'best' for years, all whilst being part of a team worth hundreds of millions. Whether you agree with Dunk's inclusion or not, the post by Stato is basically outlining the squad is not picked on merit, and hasn't been so for as long as I can remember.

You probably don't watch us much, and I wouldn't blame you based on your persuasion, but Dunk has almost entirely eliminated the last gasp challenge which got him into trouble for a few years and his game is almost as developed as it's going to get. He's a quality ball-playing CB and would walk into the squad if he played for the usual suspects.

Southgate looks to me like a yes-man with very little football insight who wouldn't want to risk his already limited reputation by calling up someone with a few own goals and the butt of a few jokes.

Not suprised he didn't get selected , i mean who wants a defender that can hit pinpoint 90 yard diagonal passes in their team , as well as his more obvious defensive duties , the example shown was one of many similar passes throughout the season , sadly i think Dunky was yet another victim of perceived small club syndrome which the England hierarchy have a exceptional history in leaving out players from lesser known teams so to speak . Jones or Dunk kinel do me a favour if Dunk played for Man Utd , he would be on the plane , simple as that .

He's useless. Any of the big clubs should look elsewhere.

If Dunk is so useless why do the Albion want him........................oh, wait............(puts finger to lips)

When I first read this thread I thought it was about charity work for children that the palace (queen mother) was doing with a water tank and Prince Charles in swim attire.

Sums my feelings up perfectly and England have been chasing to be the next France, Germany etc rather than trying to forge our own way of playing and picking players to suit. Every manager comes and and talks about how they will pick on form but the same tried and tested failures pop up at every game.

The fact Danny Wellbeck is going to the World Cup says it all

Dunk is a great asset to us but for me he is not ready to step up a level. I said before, and feel right to standby my feeling, that he will represent England- but he'll be at another club when it happens.

Happy he is off the radar. Lets keep him at the Albion rather than have the world see how good he is and thus the bidding war starts.

Whilst there may be cheeky bids, I'm not convinced they'll be a war. He's English so his price will be artificially higher.

Jones shouldn't be anywhere near the squad but I'd take Lascelles right now probably with Dunk on the waiting list.

Keane hasn't had a good season either and rightly misses out.

Ashley Young who's been immense every game I've seen him this year (which wasn't many granted, sadly beating out Sessegnon for me but who still should be in the squad), Dunk, Stones, Walker, Alexander-Arnold would be quite a laugh though and you'd think against all the weaker teams an interesting experiment. Shouldn't need as many boring midfielders with those 5 either and could look to kick on with an aggressive midfield too.

In summary, he has proven himself this season to be as good as any other English centre back playing in the Premier League and has not been given a fair shout. He may not be good enough to play in a World Cup winning side, but he is good enough to be playing for England.

Your analysis is hollow nonsense. The Premier League is the richest in the world and Dunk has been playing in it all season. He has been good in more games than he has struggled and has been picked out by multiple pundits as being a key part of a successful first season for the Albion. Even in defeat he has never looked out of his depth. None of the squads in the World Cup competition would have come close to Manchester City's this season, so talking in hushed tones about being found out against world class opposition is the kind of meaningless noise voiced by blokes in the pub who think that knowing the right cliches to repeat makes them experts. Dunk has not been sent off at all this season and been booked only seven times.

The question is not whether Dunk is the best centre back in the world, it's whether he should be considered as potentially the equal of the likes of Cahill, Jones, Stones, Maguire, Tarkowski, Mawson, Mee, Lascelles, Smalling, Jagielka, Cook, and Tomkins. Anyone not watching the other dozen week in week out for a good period wouldn't be able to make a proper detailed analysis of their game. You have proved this yourself through your hopeless analysis of Dunk's. However, per game statistics of successful blocks, passing, clearances, headed clearances, tackles, interceptions etc. put Dunk amongst the top four English centre backs more often than any of his competitors and on this reason alone he should have been given more consideration than he has received from a manager who has had a total of one managerial job outside of the FA and who hasn't managed in a top league since he was relegated nearly a decade ago.

I don't think Tarkowski should be anywhere near the squad either- he's had a decent season but I don't even see him as the best centre half at Burnley, let alone one of the best in England. No great loss that he's injured. As for Dunk: he has a claim, but then so do several other people (Lascelles, for example) so I don't feel in any way offended that the big man's not got a call-up.

Tremendous post and a very reasoned and detailed response to a post made while wearing red and blue specs.

I haven't really seen enough of any of the others, except to add the observation that Lascelles looks a tremendous player, rated by the barcodes as highly as we rate Dunk and I've obviously seen a fair bit of Steve Cook over the years and he looks better and better each game. When I've seen Stones - mainly on the telly - he has looked unconvincing as a defender, though I think he'll suit that 5 at the back formation. Phil Jones has looked an absolute liability each and every time I've seen him though so he must be OUTSTANDING in all his other games :lolol:

It will be interesting to see which big clubs eventually sign Tarkowski and Dunk...and the fees involved.

I hope it exceeds the £30 million we got for Keane,

Can one of you who think he should be in the squad remind me how much international experience he has.

Why do the palace fans on here flock to any thread about Dunk? (When they’re not meant to be posting on non franchise threads) It’s a bit weird, but clearly done out of jealousy that they have never had a centre back close to the lads ability. They really haven’t enjoyed us lighting up the premier league this season have they :ffsparr:

Are you suggesting that he shouldn't be considered, because he hasn't been considered?

Are you M C Escher?
