Dubai, why do people go on holiday there?

It seems that Dubai is a popular holiday resort. But why? What makes it so popular?

Haven't a clue, probably because it offers something different and is relatively cheap to get there on some sort of a package deal, much in the way that Torremolinos, Famagusta and Lanzarote were in the late 60's and early 70's.

It's just a regular 5 star hotel but they've cranked it up to 7.

Just what is the difference between a 5 star and a 7 star? What do you get in a 7 star that you don't get in a 5 star? I know there are a number of hotels who promote themselves as 6 or 7 star hotels but are any of them actually better than places like the 5 star George V in Paris...I don't think so !

A colleague has just pointed out that historically Brits have always gone for excrutiatingly hot places with a good sized ex-pat community to make them feel at home and which also resemble a building site. Dubai is simply the latest in the long line, the new Torremelinos?

In response to one of the replies I must admit I've never understood why people travel so far with the sole reason of 'shopping.'

No it's not!

You can stay there for £400 +/- change for a king suite that included breakfast for hubby and I, jacuzzi bathroom, plasma TVs sea view blah blah. Fantastic hotel but we stay in two others during our time there and should we go back I would pick both those over this one - al Maha and another whose name I am blanking on right now.

We have been Dubai on the way back from Kenya. Somewhere to go once just to visit, not enough to see, do or explore to make me want to go again. The shopping is OK but nothing you can't find online or in your local shops.

We had a nice time, people were very friendly and the food was amazing. Wouldn't go back by choice though.

Fair enough as a stop over but I'm puzzled why people make it a destination. As you point out, little to do (zero culture or arts), average shopping and it looks like a building site and the traffic is horrendous apparently.

Sounds like any decent 5 star to me :)

I assume you are talking about the Burj?

From Wilkpedia

Burj al-Arab characterizes itself as a "7-star" property, a designation considered by travel professionals to be hyperbole. All major travel guides and hotel rating systems have a 5-star maximum, which some hotels attempt to out-do by ascribing themselves "6-star" status. According to the hotel's official site, the Burj al Arab is a "5-star deluxe hotel".

Edit just re-read your post and it is the Burj you are talking about
