Dubai, why do people go on holiday there?

Hi, yeah had thought about it but only get a week during February so I thought that might make it a bit tight time wise.

I also heard that it's not necessarily 100% safe to take kids there but that's not an overiding factor to be honest.

Is it pricey to get there?

Like your attitude, you can always have more kids.

I went there in March 2003, the flights weren't cheap but we didn't book them until about a month before we flew...but it was for 17 people as we were on a hockey tour. We ended up flying via Paris and Jo'burg with Air France, they were OK, you might find it cheaper if you start looking for flights now.

As for safety, the people who were our hosts warned everyone to avoid certain areas of the city after dark, two people ignored their advice and were mugged. That said, we stayed in an area that was only a 10 minute walk to the Waterfront, I have been to plenty of places in the UK where I didn't feel as safe.

Met a couple in the queue at Heathrow a few years back who were off to Dubai. The bloke was going out there to watch the horse racing and his wife was going out for the shopping. They planned to spend their days apart indulging in their 'hobbies' and then meet up in the evening for dinner. Sounds like a good plan to me:lolol:

Just got back from Dubai and remembered this thread...

Much busier now than it was four years ago, and the scale of the building going on is extraordinary.

The weather is great, obviously, and so too the thrill of being somewhere different. I think the problem is that the novelty factor and the joy of wearing shorts in March and swimming in the Gulf only lasts for three or four days at most.

Any longer than that, and you start to realise that all the shops, hi-rise hotels and so on are a bit of a veneer over a place that has grown from nothing in a very short space of time, and therefore has no deep-rooted culture of its own to reward serious exploration.

Oh, and the Wild Wadi is now so busy that you have to queue for 45 minutes just to get on the rides. They were even queueing to the bottom of the steps for the Jumeirah Scarer.

People go on holiday to Dubai because they're stupid. It offers ridiculously hot weather, masses of construction (noise and dirt), and awful traffic jams. If you're lucky you might see the odd Arab. Oh, and they have shopping (that's really unique).

If you think of the type of people who are buying property in Dubai (footballers) you know it's a place to stay away from.

If you want a taste of the best of Arabia without the construction and traffic go to Muscat.
