We had a couple of hours there en-route to Trivandrum in India. Thought it seemed brash, self-indulgent, ostentatious and decorated in really bad taste :nono:

But we never left the airport :glare:

Saying that, the promo video that Emirates showed as we came into land didn't fill either of us with much glee.

I'd go if there was a free trip on offer, mind ;)

It's pretty good. Ok beaches, pretty good shops - they seem to have everything, good family entertainment - indoor skiiing, mini golf, all that kind of crap. Great nightlife (although not as good as London).

Slavery seems to be legal there, you can go mental at the cabbies, abuse room service, and all that good stuff

:cheery:

Thank goodness it's a building site at the moment - it's by far our (my company's) biggest market at the moment.

Working on what will be the world's tallest building at the moment.

They realise the Oil won't last forever and are planning for the future.

you have to see some of these things to believe it. My point is it's like the new America they've made everything EVEN bigger and spectacular, doesn't make me wanna go there again and again though!

I would have to say that if it attracts money bags premiership footballers then it is probably the height of naffness.

It's not just Dubai, although that's the main centre of attention in the Emirates at the moment. Abu Dhabi is in strong competition to become the main holiday destination in the Middle East.

There's a lot of rivalry between Emirates and AD sees itself as the overall leader (they're the biggest and by far the richest). They are developing a huge offshore island that will have equally impressive hotels and a Disneyesque theme park. They've also gone into partnership with various cultural organisations (ie The Louvre) and are creating all sorts of tourist attractions and venues. They've got loadsamoney as their oil won't run out for about 100 years so they can afford to take a longer term view.

If flashing all this money makes it 'naff' then I wouldn't argue - but you really should try and see it, especially while it's still being built. The sheer scale of what they're doing is mindblowing - especially when you see what they're building on.

Oh, and Sussex CCC are there this week.

I had to work in Dubai once - suffice to say I wouldn't go back if I were offered an all-expenses-paid trip: a truly, truly awful place - Croydon in the desert.

Seems strange to fly all that way for some bloody shops. No wonder us blokes can't understand women :D

I always say the same about the people who fly to the Far East or Florida and stay in the hotel around the pool. OK if you are going out to explore the place and locallity but not sit around a pool with a bar at the end of it.

Why spend that much money and time if you are not going to leave the hotel complex go somewhere nearer and cheaper and probably just as hot.

Not in the in sun though, nearest probably guaranteed sun in the winter is the Canaries and most places down there are Chav and timeshare tout central. At least it was when I last went a few years ago

You need to fly a minimum of 4 hours to get to the canaries from the UK so Dubai at 7 hours is not too bad if you want somewhere different with guaranteed sunshine which even the canaries can't provide

It is a horrible, horrible place, I really would pay money not to have to go there again. The only positive is that you can go quad biking in the desert. As for the 7 star hotel, who awards those stars? Er, the hotel gives them to itself.

I've got a hol booked for Tunisia £250 all in 4 star for a week. Will probably only stay round the pool, but that's what I'm expecting to do for that sort of money! (might be a bit geekey and go look at where star wars was filmed!)
