Turned right instead of left at pedi to symi town
Unlikely - if you turn right you follow the bay round to Agia Marina, where he was found. Symi town is directly over the hills on a road, and you would immediately see the difference, so I doubt Symi town was his intended destination. We were there in early June 1992 and did the Symi-Pedi walk in both directions - it’s not difficult.Turned right instead of left at pedi to symi town
Indeed. Very sad. I got lost in Croatia near to a beach once. It's a very, very scary feeling when you lose your way with no sign of lifeReally sad.
I've done this myself. I visit a Mediterranean island often. I know the landscape and my own body. Went for a short walk peak sun, was enjoying myself so decided to walk to a further swimming point. No phone, no water, little shade. Very quickly felt very, very weak. Disoriented. Lacking any mental capacity.
Somehow made it, realising I couldn't really turn back as my only chance of shade and liquid was my intended destination.
I was fit and in my thirties.
Don't overestimate your own body and don't underestimate the power of the elements.
RIP.
It would have been reported surely ? Anyway me second guessing is disrespectul so I will just say RIP, he inspired many peopleUnlikely - if you turn right you follow the bay round to Agia Marina, where he was found. Why is it assumed he had no water? If he left his wife at Agios Nikolaos beach, who’s to say he didn’t buy some on his way through Pedi?
RIP MM
I can't see any path alongside the bay on Google Maps. My guess is he climbed up high, well away from the water, then lost his footing descending the steep slope to the marina. He then tumbled into the fence-topped wall which protects the marina from rockfall.Unlikely - if you turn right you follow the bay round to Agia Marina, where he was found. Pretty much this... a series of small mistakes combined with some bad luck. Been on several fishing holidays in Cornwall and have clambered some distances over rocks and heights to get to fishing spots while carrying a lot of gear. If I had fallen and injured myself while alone I probably would have been a goner as mobile signals are poor to say the least.Having solo walked many 3-5 day treks around Australia and NZ sometimes seeing noone (partly the point) it really is easy to get disorientated in extreme (for you) weather conditions in foreign lands. He's been v unlucky, perhaps slightly foolish (and I say that having been so many times myself) and he's not got away with it, like you usually normally would. There by the grace of god etc. V saddened by this news as I liked his shows and he seemed like a lovely bloke. Rip.
There’s quite a low path all the way to Agia Marina, although not much more than a track after you leave Pedi. You’d be aware that you were heading around the bay, rather than over the hills to Symi town. But yes, i suspect he fell at some point,I can't see any path alongside the bay on Google Maps. Someone I know has been to Symi many times ... this is what they sent me yesterday evening. As she says at the end - it's just speculation - but does kind of make sense. There’s quite a low path all the way to Agia Marina, although not much more than a track after you leave Pedi.
