*Bernadotte. Gustaf is not the surname, it is just the go-to name for our kings.

The audience for that post was NSC, hence using Gustaf. :)

As an aside I recall his surname was actually Hubertus, as opposed to him being of the House of Bernadotte.

It’s been a while tbf.

It was from the United Nations under United Nations Security Council Resolution 1973.

I know what UNSCR it was thanks. And who were doing the bidding of the UN? NATO, bombing 'targets' on the ground. Let's be clear, NATO, led by Britian and America were, as ever, interested in regime change. Same as it ever was.

Remind me where the aggression was from Libya against a fellow NATO member?

Libya was at war, with itself. A civil war.
NATO forces didn’t sit down with the UN, and decide to drop bombs for the fun of it.

Oh, yes, these foolish nations at war with them themselves and the West riding in like a knight in shining armour to put things right. That model works really well doesn't it.

I think we'll have to agree to disagree when it comes to Geopolitics. You clearly think Britian and America are a force for good in the world. I disagree.

You think NATO isn't about expansionism and only acts in a defensive capacity. I disagree.

I'll just leave you with this on the current situation with NATO, Russia and Ukraine.

I have never said America is a force for good in the world. In fact, I think the exact opposite. I still think the Yanks encouraged Turkey to invade Cyprus in the 70s.

NATO bombed the shit out of Serbia in 1999, while the Russian bear did nothing but have a poo in the woods. Now we’re back to willy waving.

Merely 'defensive alliance' involvement.

But it's ok, we'll be reminded soon that it was backed by the UN so it's all ok.

Kosovo suffered from Serbian massacres and Milosevic was tried as a war criminal.

It is. NATO has never made a pre-emptive strike.

My objection is Johnson has made this decision without Parliament. He is acting like dictator without accountability.
Don’t get me wrong, if Sweden joins NATO then we automatically protect members, but if Russia invades or commits an act of hostility, now we are bound to protect them.

With our underfunded armed services that would be a struggle, barely got enough to defend ourselves

Be interesting to see if you could provide a list of countries/regions where America have been actively involved in invading or destabilising for regime change. All in the guise of being the world's policeman, obviously.

Would pass some time during the football close season. You may have to get cracking though as you might struggle to finish by the start of next season

When I did Peace and Conflict Studies at the university, we had to read "Killing Hope: U.S. Military and CIA Interventions Since World War II" by William Hope. The list is looong...

There's no power block in the world that's acting purely out of a sense of selflessness, but my thought process is that the world is a better place with a strong NATO. Without it, countries like Russia, (and I've no doubt in due course China) will continue a program of territorial expansion with all the human misery that entails.

If the world was a better place then we would be better off without a militarily dominant single superpower and allies forming a block. But that fact that all NATO countries are democratic with an open media means there is a bulwark in place against those countries, openly carrying out mass murder, rape and acquiring territory by force

Yes, all NATO countries are shining lights of democracy and open media. None of them have carried out mass murder, rape or acquired territory by force.

Oh.

Well Belgrade got bombed shitless by NATO without a UN mandate or an attack on a NATO member in 1999, but they got a free pass in the end.

Once Johnson starts launching air strikes without UN mandates like that or even invasions on other sovereign states based on dossiers of lies we could start using the D word.

We had one of those back in the 90s………he was a right slippery c@nt…………should be in The Hague.
