Pretty obvious really. I’ve just thrown in some more history as that is the direction of the thread. Perhaps a little too sarcastic. Anti Americanism was the trendy world view of our generation so I shouldn’t have been surprised to see it being aired as whataboutery for Putin’s massacres and human rights abuses.

I don't think anyone was engaging in whataboutery but you can't have a discussion about geopolitics without mentioning the US's role as hegemon.

That doesn't excuse or even rationalise Putin's aggression. To paraphrase John Maynard Keynes, Putin is a madman in authority, who hears voices in the air, distilling his frenzy from some academic scribblers.

Few of his moves follow logic as we'd understand it.

I think that is all true but Putin himself has saught to justify his actions in rambling historical lectures. It comes down to whether we think this is relevant or not. The whataboutery on NATO is pretty explicit on this thread as it is in Putin’s speeches.

Perhaps it is good that you appear to be an outlier. Your view was more rational when Putin was not acting like a madman. Russia's invasion of Ukraine requires everyone to adjust, not least those near or bordering Russia itself. Maybe a lot of Swedes prefer self-preservation against the perceived threat of Russia. America/NATO won't suddenly impose a government on the Swedes and neither will they invade Sweden.

I'm not paranoid. I just don't want Sweden, or anyone else for that matter, to be in some sort of alliance with states such as the US and UK with centuries of committing needless greedy mass murders. I have no love for Russia either. All of these repulsive superpowers can go **** themselves as far as I'm concerned.
