Britain and France could provide a Nuclear deterrent against Trump according to Crystia Freeland , a possible successor to Justin Trudeau as Prime minister of Canada

The UK 's Nuclear " Deterrent " ceased a few years back. There was a test firing of an unarmed Trident missile by the RN...A few seconds after launch it disintegrated much to the confusion of observers. ...word came shortly that the US was monitoring the launch, detected an anomaly that was going to cause the missile going off course so THEY blew it up remotely. Ergo, the US has an override on the UK's very expensive Trident system....Private Eye were all over this a few years back.

Everything moves in cycles. In this cycle, the US is an unreliable partner and everyone will need to adapt accordingly. But come January 20th 2029 there will be a new president (if Vance hasn't inherited it before then) - either we switch back to Democracy or the US really will be an unreliable partner and basically be cut out of global affairs if there's a Constitution Amendment busting 3rd term for the worst president in history, or someone like him.

It's really very sad that the US is no longer a close ally and that one person can disrupt the global order of things so thoroughly, and so quickly. But that's how it currently is.
We’re in the decade that the vision of the ‘West’, shared values of democracy, human rights, justice and fairness split.

I was 16 when the Berlin Wall came down and with it a new sense of respect of sovereign states, democracy and progress.

35 years later and it is being torn down, almost like we’re hitting reverse gear. The UK and France in particular are desperately trying to cling to what is left of that West, but the US and the rising of the right across Europe is a new West and it isn’t sharing any aspirations of shared human rights, democracy or freedoms.

We are in the early 30s again and perhaps only a matter of time. The likes of Trump and Putin are only friends until they’re not friends.

Since Trump took office never a day goes by without another bit of good news for Russia.

I think today's announcement that the USA is suspending Intelligence sharing with Ukraine is another step towards America coming out of NATO. Their membership of the organisation is now untenable.

The purpose of the organisation is to protect against threats to the territories of North America and Europe, so because Trump has allied himself with Russia, Russia is the biggest threat to Europe, and the USA is threatening Canada, US membership is untenable.

In terms of military secrets, covert operations, spying etc we can't be sharing information with the US, as that will surely now be going straight to Putin.

Trump keeps banging on about this economic mismatch of £350 billion being spent by the USA on the Ukraine Conflict and only $100 billion by Europe. These figures have been fact-checked, including The Kiel Institute for the World Economy and their figures were $138 billion Europe, $119 billion USA.

In his first term Trump made it clear he was all about making Europe pay its way, and the above figures and the significant increase in financial commitment by almost every country since then shows that they have responded to his argument.

However, if he had to justify withdrawing from NATO then he'll simply say "$350 billion vs $100 billion - they didn't pay their way".

There's clearly something about the number 350 that is attractive to pathological liars.

This is why you won’t see Starmer riding out to attack Trump the way many other European leaders will in the months to come. Britain is far too intertwined with the US militarily (and in the intelligence space). It’s impossible to unpick it without essentially ripping up the British security sector and starting again from 1945.

I have a mate who works in the defence industry who says it is a complete myth that the US have any control over the use of our nuclear weapons. The ‘override’ does not exist.
Hope he’s right!

Yes, somehow Trump wants to sell this thing called peace to line his own pockets. Not sure if it’s his to sell though. Bit like the emporer’s suit of clothes.
Maybe but until he came on scene I had never heard any leader talking about peace or even a cease fire. If this carries on no nation will put troops in Ukraine and with troops getting smaller and dishartened there will only be one winner.
With Putin leading Russian I have had real worries that this could end up as WW3 so I am dedlighted whenever I hear people talking about a peace agreement.

Remember when they tried to claim the Biden admin was corrupt:

Handing billions of our money to Elon while f***ing over rural voters too.

So Trump's idea is for internet that is less reliable and more expensive for the users. But is going to give more control and money to his billionaire mate.

A microcosm of what is going on right now.

Once there is peace in Ukraine do you seee Putin stopping at Eastern Ukraine? My fear is that this peace deal/appeasement deal with embolden him to start on other countries. While being waved through by his mate.

What else has impressed you about Trump's first couple of months?

Yep. Hitting the nail on the head.

Who needs internet during a thunderstorm anyway? It's not like Trump's NOAA is going to be able to tell you that a tornado is heading your way anyway!

With Republicans controlling the house and the senate, Trump can do whatever he likes, and will get away with it.

He's charging $5m a pop to meet one-on-one with business leaders. This is corruption, clear as day. It's bribes being paid for favours.

He will use these 4 years to line his pockets, and he'll flee to Russia at the end to avoid any consequences. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/mar/05/trump-dinner-mar-a-lago
