Let’s see how this trade war plays out with China, Canada and Mexico. I’ve a suspicion that Trump wants what he can’t get; a reduction in prices for consumers but greater paid jobs (especially in manufacturing) for average Joes. But I’ve got a feeling that prices in America are about to start rising. He is a bull in a China shop!
i suspect Trump is trying to play 3d chess while only seeing in 1.5 dimensions. there's a lot of things going on, the trade imbalance, exposed supply chains, an intention to reshore production to US, immigration and fentanyl imports. since the tariff announcement there's been a lot mentioned on latter issue, looks suspiciously like giving Canada and Mexico an out: be seen to do something on border control and the tariffs are lifted.
but... there's a large risk they wont play along, especially Canada who doesn't think they are a cause of problems (probably aren't). dont think Trump or his people have anticipated this. if they dont play along, Trump is stuck with large inflationary problem of his own making.
China is different, they only got a 10% tariff, because that's expected to stay. this will achieve another target of tariffs, raising lots of revenue for paying down debt and tax cuts as promised. likley have a moderate inflation affect, much can be absored.

This is possibly one the stupidest things Donald Trump has done, and it's a high bar of stupidity. Canada?! A trade war with f***ing Canada, historically and literally one of their closest allies. Cost of Maple Syrup jokes aside, the US imports about 75% of its oil, and 60% of that is from Canada. This isn't going to go down well when these tarrifs hit the price at the pumps.

This is a man that has bankrupted six businesses, I suppose.

He said that he was the person to end wars, somehow forgetting that wars aren't always fought with nasty weapons. He may have just started one almighty trade war, somehow forgetting that they have victims too. Such as millions who can be thrust into poverty.

This is very annoying for us because when America has a sneeze, we catch a cold.

Without the protection of the EU, I think our economy might be in for a very rough 4 years. Financial markets hate these sort of Trumpian unpredictable actions, the sort he threatened to do last time but did not have both houses behind him.
I am very worried that this trade war hurricane he is creating could wash up on our shores very shortly.

Conversely, there could be rather unexpected benefit of BREXIT, although it cannot be claimed by anyone with credit. The UK runs a deficit with the USA on trade, so we may not be singled out as it would counter productive. Thus we are on peripherals of any bun fight he starts with the mainland. But if he does start on the EU he may be biting a bit more of than he can chew.

There is a downside to the above though. That being that the government may prostitute itself to Trump. Something that would be ugly in its presentation and pretty nauseous in its taste.

And Labour / Reeves will get the blame for it.

They already did with the gilt markets which went up everywhere in Europe because of the Trump effect but went up here because of Labour.
The anti labour press were quick to bash labour for the rise but never commented 4 days later when they dropped back to whence they came.

The Economist published a semi-serious article last month that the EU should ask Canada to join them; I agree. We've been talking about spreading our export eggs ever since Dubya. We already have some bilateral agreements with the EU; integration is the next logical step. Judging from comments and posts across social media (Blue Sky, FB, IG, news sites, etc.) this morning, it looks like we in Canada are prepared to boycott American businesses and products en masse.

And if you think Brexit will help you negotiate a sweet deal with the increasingly autocratic US, let me remind you that the Canada-America relationship is literally 100x more "special" than what you have with your former colonies. Trump's word means nothing if he turns on Canada for absolutely no valid reason; he is disregarding and shredding a 35-year-old agreement that made the 3 largest nations in North America a solid, unified, integrated economic block. The auto industry in Canada, Mexico and the US will shut down completely within a fortnight (some car parts cross the borders 4-5 times before they're assembled into a finished product); and if Alberta agrees to withhold part of its oil exports (the US imports 75% of its crude, 60% from Canada), Americans will be in a world of hurt. Québec can turn off the electricity in most of the North-East (supplied through our hydroelectric dams); Ontario and Saskatchewan can cut off their supply of essential metals (aluminium, nickel, steel) and potash (which American farmers depend on). The National Association of Home Builders in the States have already sent out a communiqué that limited and tariffed Canadian lumber will result in significantly higher costs. Red states will suffer most at first; but the longer this goes on, the more the effects will be felt by the entire country.

And to end this short op-ed piece on a sports note:

Here's a video from the 300s

Fans in Calgary (Alberta) also booed the US anthem before the game.

Probably time for the UK to try and improve trading relationships with the EU, which has been long overdue because of all the sensitivities around “Leave means Leave”.

P.S. If Canada and Mexico throttled the US economy, would Trump invade us? Would he find enough sycophants in the Armed Forces to do his bidding? He'd try Greenland first; and if NATO doesn't respond militarily to that, Europe certainly won't come to Canada's defense, fearing most likely a war on two fronts with Russia and Murka. At this point, the worst-case scenario is the realisation of Orwell's 1984, with Putin, Trump and Xi dividing up the world along with junior partners in Turkey, India, North Korea and maybe Saudi Arabia.
