Well at least we don't have to listen anymore when they go on about how much better they are than the rest of us....

America as a country and culture is forever stained by this election. It's spent two centuries lecturing the world about the American Dream - meritocratic values, freedom and opportunity for all who wish to better themselves, under-pinned by a belief in democratic institutions and the rule of law. Turns out that if you have enough money and power, political & corrupt justices will ignore or remove the legal barriers that would have prevented a seditionist, convicted criminal and court confirmed sex offender from running for the highest office. Then the country will have no problem voting him in.

Who would ever be able to take it seriously were they to make another 'Mr Smith Goes To Washington'? 'All the President's Men'? '12 Angry Men'? , 'Erin Brockovic'? even 'Home Alone'? All those WWII films? All those Westerns? All those Superhero films? All those teen comedies where the underdogs defeat the rich bullies? The bleedin' West Wing!! Their film and TV culture has been crammed with works of art that celebrate how America uniquely allows the little person, against all of the odds, to defeat an all powerful and corrupt foe. This result is proof that enough of them are willing to sell all of these celebrated ideals for just the hope and promise of a bit of short term extra cash. They've voted to put the bully in charge of the ski resort; to support the outlaws attacking the farmer's village; for a stronger policeman who will ensure that Rick can't help Laszlo and Ilsa to get on that plane.

The country has completed ceded any moral highground it ever had. The World's longest standing democracy has confirmed that it's democratic values have always taken second place behind it's materialistic values. America is, and always has been, Gordon Gecko in Shane's clothing and anytime in the future that they pretend otherwise, the rest of the world can just play it's Trump card.
Sadly eighty-odd million Americans hate that stuff.

That or.....eighty-odd million Americans think the ginger weirdo is a better bet than the dodderer and his robotic last-minute placewoman.

America is one of many nations who by and large get the governments they deserve.
I accept there is a lot of dark arts manipulation of the right/accessibility to vote...
But even the outcome of that is not necessarily unavoidable:

It wasn't Donald trump who pardoned Hunter Biden for every crime he has committed over the past 10 years, including those that haven't come to light yet.
Yes. They are just as bad as each other. That's why Biden flew off in a huff today and refused to take part in Trump's inauguration after his plan to overturn the result of a democratic election had blown up in a riot of violence.

I've little love for Biden or the Democrats, but one is a lifelong institutional politician with all the ills that entails, and the other is a wannabe dictator, seditionist, fraudster and sex offender with all the ills that entails. Far too many people have been willing to overlook this obvious fact just because they percieve that the latter is more in line with their economic values than the former. I bow to few on my dislike for her, but if it's a choice between someone with opposing economic values to mine that lives in the real world, or someone with shared economic values who is a complete fantasist, willing to smash everything to stay in power, I'll take Thatcher over Mao any day.

At least those 4.4 million people have a shot at becoming the president.

Looking at Trump's God awful family, Vance and Musk and Zuckerberg is enough to bring up a little bit of sick. And that's before they just said Infantino is there 🤮 Heaven help America and the world. I guess we just have to hope that somehow these ghouls aren't as bad as we fear and we all come out the other side.
Should have been easy to field a winning opponent then should it not! Are your lot the weakest in American history? Couldn't find just one - one out of 100 million. Heaven help us all!!

Someone needs to take a hammer and chisel to the inscription on the Statue of Liberty.

“Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.”

Interesting piece in the FT about tariffs on China, it seems its unlikely to hurt them much.

A generation ago the US had more leverage, not now

the point of tariffs isn't to hurt China, it's to encourage re-shoring of production to US. the fact this will take time and lead to considerable price increases is lost on Trump, but that's the intention.

I don't think that they actually do. I think some don't care, some haven't made the connection, and some have convinced themesleves that the billionaire son of a millionaire who cheated his way through his private school, private Ivy League college education and subsequent business career supported by the richest men on the planet is actually the underdog. :nono:
