I think that any mandate for industrial action must be backed with a majority vote, and normally only a high majority will do, having 51% for industrial action would not be good enough.

In the industrial action ballot on Pay Conditions and Royal Mail's Business Plan, the results were as follows:

Number of ballot papers returned : 85,236
Number of ballot papers found to be invalid: 53
Thus, total number of valid papers to be counted: 85,183

Number voting YES: 66,064 (77.56% of valid vote)
Number voting NO: 19,119 (22.44% of vaild vote)

TOTAL 85,183 (100% of valid vote)

I am not a postman, repeat I am not a postman but I still work for Royal Mail.
I am a maintenance technician.

The £1038.73 I lost was for 71 hours that I was/am on strike for. I don't do a five day week I work on a shift rota system. That doesn't include the allowances I will lose either.

In response to Adam Crozier’s comments this morning, Dave Ward, deputy general secretary, said:

To get their work done within their hours postal workers are carrying more mail than they should, not taking their breaks, and using their own cars to take mail out on deliveries. This all ensures flexibility for Royal Mail.

“Adam Crozier has not been involved in the recent talks and does not understand the specific issues around this deal. By driving through his idea of flexibility Royal Mail will lose the good faith of postal workers.”

This just goes to show who seems to be intent on ruining the negotiations doesn't it?

one third of the people where I work are being made redundant. we know why, we accept it. we don't strike. bunch of work shy ****s who walk out at will. sack them all. not exactly a difficult job, so they're easily replaced.

If I was in a job that didn't pay me enough then I would look for another one. There really are plenty around.

I would not under any circumstances consider strike action.

In the real world, if you don't like your job you find a new one. That's the way the world works.

In the real world life aint that simple , you might be in a shitty job but what is the point of leaving if there are no jobs going elsewhere ? The vast majority of people working in the Post Office have stayed in the job because once you've stuck it out for 6 months the next thing you know 20 years have flown by.

There was a bloke on the news last night who said that he is paid for 8 hours work, it can take him as little as 3 to complete his round, he can then go back to the sorting office and get paid overtime to work the balance. That suggests to me that there is something wrong with the system, if I were running the company I would take a serious look at the policy regarding pay, is there any wonder that they are striking to protect what they already have.

It may take him 3 hours to do his round but we have to sort our round as well .
We arrive for work at 6am and cant leave the office till 9am when all the mail has finally come in .
As your obviously not a postman you might have got the wrong end of the stick.
Every round has been checked and have been timed at 3 hours 30 minutes so if you leave at 9 am after sorting for 3 hours you are supposed to have a 40 minute break before starting your deliveries meaning you finish with your break at 13.10pm.
This guy was obviously referring to his round only and not his sorting and if he wants to work through his dinner break and run round like a blue ass fly and kill himself to finish an hour early its up to him.
Its pratts like him that give proper postmen a bad name, and I expect he doesnt deliver parcels right either

You are absolutely right, I am not a postman, though I am currently planning a change of career and it was certainly one I had been considering. I was outside earlier when the local postie came past on his rounds, had a chat with him and now realise that the item on the news last night only presented a few of the facts, how unusual for the British media. This bloke explained things in a similar manner to yourself, except that he would have to delay the start of his working day by 2 hours to 0630, most people would probably see that as a positive. However, his point was well delivered (just like our letters), he would then be finishing his shift at 1430 which would mean him missing his rugby on a Saturday...on that point as a fellow sports fan I wished him well with the dispute.
