[Football] Do you still watch MOTD?

I was at university with a good mate of Adrian Chiles, who I therefore got to know in the pub way before he got famous, but then met him again a few times in later years when he was presenting MOTD. It was a bit surreal going out drinking with the guy who presented MOTD that I had watched ever since I could remember!

These days I just record it and watch games selectively and generally not the punditry bit. I did once meet Gary Lineker at Euston station and found him to be a grumpy sod.

Always but very rarely on a Saturday night. Spin through a lot of the analysis - largely dependent on who’s talking - and have the mute button ready for a couple of terrible commentators (1 male, 1 female - before I’m accused of being Joey Barton).

More to the point, does anyone still watch MOTD without knowing the results for the games, and always look away when told to do so by the BBC News reader just before MOTD starts.


I haven't watched MOTD for years.

I did that once but probably 10+ years ago. It was tough during the day trying to avoid it all but made MoTD very fun!
Back to the OP, I watch it more if we're first one as you get longer highlights.

Of course I watch it. I enjoy the punditry. I fast forward any games I have watched in full earlier on the TV.

All this 'don't watch any football other than the Albion' bollocks is like saying 'don't listen to any music other than Barclay James Harvest - because I'm the bass player'.

I watch it live pretty much every week all the way through, with a bottle of red, whether we've won lost or drawn. I like rounding off Saturday night this way.

More of a Big Match man myself

Having enjoyed the delights of Southern Soccer, with weekly displays of Ray Hiron and Albie McCann, and guest footage from Yorkshire Television (always Hull City) then MOTD seems like a soothing stroll in the countryside after an hour of being jostled on the tube by idiots with pointy elbows and knees.

I stopped watching it . ( only bits of, sometimes)
The show has , for me, too much talk rather than football, and the small highlights of recorded games fails to tell the story of the match.
I can remember when they selected just two games and showed a decent amount of each one. That was better.

I never, ever watch it live, I always record it. Then like a lot of others I never actually watch the recording unless we've won or had a 'good' draw. Then I watch two things: I watch the opening credits (as the theme tune always takes me back) and then I fast-forward to our game. I watch that and listen to the analysis. Then I delete it. I have very little interest in the other PL games - and less than zero interest in hearing them analysed.

I would prefer it much more if it was a shorter programme showing just the football. I can happily watch the Sky round-up programmes of the matches in League 1 and League 2.

No, there’s so much live football on tv I no longer see the point of a few minutes of highlights. The gulf in tactical knowledge between the MOTD and Sky pundits is also embarrassing.

Only if Brighton win, draw or there was something controversial in our defeat I want discussed. Never been interested in other teams and didn't watch when we weren't in the Premier League.
I think I'm just a Brighton fan and not a football fan. However, I do watch Leyton Orient occasionally as they're just down the road.

Yeah, MOTD is great. The 2 minute sky highlights don’t cover as much.

The only time I cba with MOTD is, like the last 2 weeks for example, when there is only one or two games, over the weekend. A full MOTD is a thing of beauty, an institution. Sadly fizzling out bc of the money in the game.

Yes I do. I think it’s a great highlights programme.

MotD is the perfect example of complaining about absolutely nothing (he says, whilst complaining about people complaining).

• If you get your highlights elsewhere, fine;
• If you don't like the analysis, skip it;
• If you don't like the host, skip the link sections;
• If you don't like the commentary, mute it or get over it. It's 3 minutes;
• If you don't watch it at all, why do you care?
• If you do watch it, good for you.

As for whether it's dying off, it's still watched consistently by millions and in my opinion does it's job as a highlight show better than almost any other package show. For my money, nobody has yet come across a way of doing it better.
