I saw it as a 3 I must say with Igor a wide 3rd CB, Hinch and Lamptey both wing backs but it was lopsided and nuanced but not sure any of them fulfilled a conventional full back role yesterday.

I saw it as a 3 I must say with Igor a wide 3rd CB, Hinch and Lamptey both wing backs but it was lopsided and nuanced but not sure any of them fulfilled a conventional full back role yesterday.

It’s effectively a back four, with one solid full-back and one more attacking full (wing) back. We do exactly the same with a back line of Veltman, Dunk +1 and Pervis (only in that scenario it is the left back Pervis who bombs forward, whilst Joel sits.)

Same principle yesterday, but with the right back Hinshelwood given freedom to go forward, while the left back Igor sat.

Tariq Lamptey played on the left wing - he never at any point spent time in the back line.

We’ve been playing this formation a lot this season. It’s very fluid, a back four when we are defending and goes in to a back 3 when we have possession which allows Jack Hinshelwood to advance a lot further forward and effectively become an extra midfielder. As soon as we lose the ball Jack (or someone else who can cover) gets back to right back and we are a 4 again back there.

You are right at no point yesterday did Lamptey play as a wing back, he was a winger all the time he was on the pitch.

Yes. Facundo and Tariq were clearly playing as wingers. And you're right, it's normally Pervis that is the FB that bombs on whereas the other one (Veltman) sits, but with Hinshelwood playing at RB, he's been the one to do it.
It's the same way that Pep plays with one FB tucked in (eg the Stones role), allowing a 3-2 defensive formation 3 defenders, and then the other one and DCM further up) when we have the ball. Jonathan Wilson knows most about formations, and he's been writing about it in terms of City for a while now, while also linking it back to the way teams have set up in the past.
It's also why the oft-repeated 'we need a RB like Pervis' plea neglects how we actually set up.
