what do the good people of NSC think about this.

DO NOT RESUSCITATE for those who do not know what it means
in what circumstances would you have this written in your medical records or for that matter a member of your families records, or how would you fell if a member of the medical profession put it on a record of yours or someone in your family without your knowledge?????

The pedant in me wants to point out it's DNAR Do not attempt resuscitation. I don't believe it can be put on your record without your permission (unless you are unable to - mental health issues etc.).

Our grandad had that before he died, he was in and out of hospital so much that he was in constant pain, and his body was gradually giving up, as had he

We were all obviously devastated when he died, but understood his reasons behind it and once over the initial shock, understood why he wanted to put it in place

Not saying he was better off dead, but watching him struggle on a daily basis is more heartbreaking then him dying

My Grandad was DNR just before he died.

Having been in hospital for about 6 weeks and knowing he would never really leave he made the decision himself.

re story: Disgraceful, in a word.

NHS is a shadow of it's former self.

Lots of great people still working in the system and they do a lot of good. But there are bad apples that need to be rooted out.

DNR is NEVER put on medical records without the patients consent, a next of kin or named signatory.

BBC News - Downs syndrome patient challenges resuscitation order

Disgraceful, in a word.

NHS is a shadow of it's former self.

You need to put into context exactly what you mean. Is this a general comment about DNR or is it in relation to the story above?

According to my wife who runs an ITU, it can be either.

i would imagine there is a detail we are not told, prehaps a legal guardian from the care home authorised?

eitherway if i were in that position, unable to swallow and bed bound, i reckon i'd about ready to shuffle off myself.

This type of thing is why it is so important to discuss these issues with your family, I know many struggle to talk about death and illness with their close family but they could well be asked difficult questions by doctors and they can only carry out your wishes if they have know them.
I have a serious illness and I have discussed my wishes with my parents, my uncle has the same illness and nobody knows a thing, he is going through something very serious next week and we don't know what he wants should things go wrong, he is just not the type of person that talks about these things, not ideal.

the problem is almost teh same with assisted suicide....

is it in the interests of the patient or the family? Does the person take the view that it would be better for all concerned if they just gave up?

Unless there are strict medical grounds and doctors and medical practitioners advice then it should be outlawed.

Be interesting what Laura's take on this is as I know she has had experience with this situation working as a nurse

I agree there should be checks and balances to attempt to prevent third party influence having an effect but to outlaw it would be wrong.

It's already bad enough that people who are very ill but can't commit suicide due to being incapacitated are forced to live a painful life. DNR is essential and assisted death should be legal ( with safeguards ).

Saved my Dad's life this summer. Superb care.

Not on topic, but, certainly didn't seem a 'shadow of it's former self' from where I was standing.

Are you saying that's official policy?

The individual NHS Trusts have their own set of policies and objectives to follow which only get unearthed once they are in the public domain.

Hey, I'm not criticising the great work lots of dedicated people do, far from it.

My mum had a leg amputated in July and the care was first class. But the general feeling I got was that the wards were in need of decorating, some staff showed low morale, an OT worker guessed the size of sling my mum needed for her hoist at home, meaning she had to be re-admitted for two weeks until the correct sling could be ordered.

So yes, the NHS is very good, but could be a whole lot better. Maybe money could be spent here at home rather than sending hundreds of millions to India who have a Spaceport! Anyway, I am rambling so I'm out. :)
