Unreal, stays in a detention centre for 5 days to fight it and wins. This is his Muhammad Ali moment. Hero.

Not a hero. According to his own defense he had covid but was then photographed without a mask infecting others.

I love this story. It is great fun. Nigel farage is the freedom fighter for an immigrant who wants to work in a country for three weeks and take all the money home with him. Remarkable twist.

Apparently he could have come in unjabbed - he just needed to do a 14 day quarantine in a nice apartment with tennis court etc, at his own expense. He was offered an exemption route to avoid that hassle so took it - misled I guess, or the AUS government changed their mind. I guess he would have done the 14-day quarantine if he knew that was needed, I think all the tennis players did that last year for the AUS open?

Not misled, just didn't understand the (admittedly complicated) things involved.

The exemptions he received were from the Victorian state government (allowing him to enter and stay in the state) and Tennis Australia (allowing him to play in the tournament).

The problem is, however, entry to Australia as a whole is a Federal government responsibility and there was no exemption granted at that level.

I suspect on Djokovic's side, it was simply not understood that the exemptions they received did not apply to the Visa granting entry to Australia. They received that Visa on the basis of claiming a valid exemption, but that exemption was not valid for the purposes of the Visa - hence the border officials refusing entry. It's a shame the border officials jumped the gun and allowed the court an opening to reinstate the Visa for technicality reasons.

Meh.

Some similarities... a privileged demographic thinking anything thrown upon us is made for the greater good of everyone gets challenged by someone with a different background and perspective. But thats pretty much where the similarities end. Ali faced a real risk of a real punishment for opposing what the privileged percieved as heroic and the greater good for society (to go to Vietnam and kill people) while Djokovics greatest fear is that he - personally and without altruistic motifs - is that he could lose the chance of winning some ****ing tennis tournament. Your comparison is exaggerated.

It's got the makings of a great movie, especially if he gains entry and then wins the title. I absolutely hope this doesn't happen, btw.

I don't like the bloke and hope he isn't allowed to compete.

However, if the Australian government overrule the judges decision and deport him it will mean he can't return to Australia for three years.
It must also mean that Oz move closer to making everyone being vaccinated to be in the country.

The implications of that decision will be massive whichever side of the fence you are on.
Australia has been becoming more and more a nanny state for several years, they have put themselves in a corner over this situation.

It's all very messy, pass me the popcorn.

I wonder if this bit is crucial. i can't see the Aussies wanting to stop him competing there for 3 years. Were the other tennis players at the tournament who were firstly granted visa entry and then cancelled also banned for 3 years?

I've seen these images, are they authentic/genuine? There doesn't seem to be much official word on this, only twitter people...

Its a shame Djokovic didn't just get his bloody jabs.

Then your post would be rendered completely irrelevant.
