Disgusting Tory sub-human scum

So let me get this straight - Richard Benyon is just one director of the family firm Englefield Estate which in turn is a minority member of the consortium that has bought the flats - and it's all his fault that the new owners have the temerity to suggest that the tenants should pay a 'market rent - right!

This story was first published by the Mirror back in June.

Benyon is claiming that criticism of him is politically motivated?

Well ... he's not entirely stupid.

i know you are a self professed looney, but anyone should see immigrants really arent contributing to house prices. demand for property in this part of London is from workers in The City. who else can pay £2k on rent?
Five immigrants live in the same property all pay £100 per week (cheap for London) = £2k PCM rent for the landlord Looney has a point. I know of someone who rents properties from private landlords and then sub lets all the rooms to immigrants for a business.

Doesn't appear to me to be anything to do with immigrants or empty properties in Belgravia.

Hoxton a traditional working class area has over the years become very trendy with new media type skateboard blogging pop up restaurent eating New Labour voting 30 somethings trapped in an Apple eco system.

A privately owned run down estate has been snapped up another private company to reburbish and sell on / rent to people not interested in adequate transport links but loving the local coffee shops and improv nights about the local gastro pub.

I presume this landlord Tory MP has never had from tenants on housing benefit, because IDS may see the conflict of publically demonising the "dependency culture" and privately benefiting from it ?

No, Price is the dependent variable, on the Quantity supplied and demanded. In this case Demand. If the demand wasn't there the money would go elsewhere.

Whatever, most of us understand the most simple of economic theory.

The fact is no one put a gun to Benyon's head to do this. If he can live with himself then fine. Many will see him for the profiteering, free-market scumbag he and his family is.

People will though!

The tide is turning. Even true blues like Buzzer and now Phil Collins are distancing themselves from these types :lolol:

I know close to two hundred people who work in the city and none of them live there either as a main or temporary residence.

Who do you think the main clients of Stirling Akroyd are then?

What a depressing article. The gap between those at the top and those at the bottom of society seems to have widened so much in the past ten or even five years - not good at all. And terrible for the economy.

This is all abundantly the case, although it's been going on for so much longer than that. That's the neoliberal project for you, which succeeded a period of social democracy when the economy grew faster, and inequality diminished considerably (and all at a time of large -- far larger than at present -- government debt). The most convincing case of this has been put by Thomas Piketty in his book Capital in the Twenty-First Century.

Cue some riposte from Buzzer, claiming to be right on, but really defending the neoliberal project...

So you have Benyon who is just one shareholder of a company that in turn has a minority holding in a consortium that actually owns this property - why would he have a problem living with himself? ???

So people who are pro-free market are scumbags? I'll take the scumbag tag, and label you a thief.
Nice to see France, Venezuela, the USSR, North Korea and Cuba do so well.

Personally, if I was in his position I'd feel, at least, slightly uncomfortable knowing I was a shareholder contributing to this.

And as for this you will have to enlighten me as I've not got a clue what you're on about.

The worrying thing is that this is a very real issue affecting the UK and you have the usual apologists attempting to say it is somehow okay.

As long as people are getting richer ethics go out the window, the cons will win the election in May. Bliar won in 2005 despite the Iraq war and its fall out.

Interesting that the title of the thread was 'Disgusting TORY sub-human scum' rather than 'Disgusting sub-human scum'. Some people clearly have a political agenda.

So what are you suggesting he does? It's not all as black and white as being suggested.

The properties have been left in a very poor state of repair by the prior owners and they require significant investment. The Benyon Estate got involved with the project because we have extensive experience in Hackney, having been part of the community for over 150 years. A condition of working with Westbrook on the property management was to ensure that the residents of the New Era Estate were properly supported, and given ample warning of any changes to their situation. Despite having no legal rights to extensions, the 89 assured shorthold tenants (and their families) have been offered a further 12-month contract at discounted rents. Without our involvement, the new owners will terminate the existing leases, which they are entitled to do, refurbish the flats and then let them all out at 100% of full market rents.

right, so they'll pay £100/wk to live in N1 rather than £50/wk to live a mile further out? not likely. and the landlord is going to accept 5 to a flat living while trying to market their other £2k PCM flats? even less likely. i don't deny for a second there are sublets (and not just immigrants, the many other cases are conveniently ignored), but they aren't the source of driving up house prices in central London. unless by immigrant we mean French, German, Spanish, American etc, etc professionals coming here.

I know close to two hundred people who work in the city and none of them live there either as a main or temporary residence.

im sure you have a point, but its lost in a sea of missing context. what did you mean?
