How the mighty NSC inner sanctum stick together eh?..... good teamwork... nothing like collective bullying, ... and I am not making a statement on the theme of this thread, just the raising of that oft seen holier than thou style displayed by some of these contributors and moderators.

He's been getting a lot of stick but I tend to agree with a large number of bushy's arguments on this thread. I think if a different poster had made them and in a less confrontational way they would be much more widely accepted on here.

Then dont dismiss out of hand as "bigoted" the people that aren't over enamoured with having their area tranformed into a shithole by the influx of africans .

Given you never bang on about the white working class having their area transformed by white gentrification I can only presume you have no issue with the white working class being bulldozed out of The Isle of Dogs or priced out of Islington and more recently Hoxton and Shoreditch and Stratford? Why dont you ever talk about this real and pressing issue which is affecting your WWC as much as the influx of Africans might be?

IMHO it is not for us to say when people should get over it. It is the people in the countries that we colonised who can say when it is time to get over it.

The Aboriginals for example had an unbrken culture of something like 40,000 years without a great deal of change until British/Australian invsion. Who are we to now tell them to 'get over it' when 200 years later they are still effected by it in every way possible. We are not saying 'get over it' we are saying you must fit in with our culture and forget about what happened. After 40,000 years is this really possible?

You might be able to 'get over it' but I suggest the victims of our empire who have had their lives and culture irreversible changed are having a little more trouble.

Another example here of the arrogance of the English which goes along way to explaining why some people dislike us so much.

You write things I don't even say where does 'get over it' come into it, where do I say that?

In my post (88) I point out the positives of the British Empire which I notice no-one has really disputed. I agree that there were negatives, but there were also many positives which some conveniently forget.

You also seem to ignore the whole point of the post (88) in that the curtain on the Empire came down 60+ years ago. Yet how can this be relevant to whom is eligible to vote in UK elections now?

In respect of your final sentence it has already been pointed out to you earlier in this thread (post 58) your contradictions about the English being disliked the world over. It is just not correct (it is a theme that runs through a few of your threads). I have just been in the USA and I can assure you they do not hate us. In the course of my job I have employed a lot of people whose origins are from what is now the Commonwealth (Nigeria/India/Pakistan and others) and when I speak to them on the whole there are far more positives than negatives in respect of England itself and the English people. Tolerance and fairness of the English being a recurring answer when I ask such a question.

Some people dislike the English, in my opinion, more do not. You (and anyone whom claims this) are steroetyping against the English yourself. Maybe some, but not all Englishmen are arrogant, but in my experiences so are some, but not all Americans/French/German/South African/Australian/every other nationality in the world, that is the way it is.

This is hardly a good benchmark is it.

why not? not this oh americas bad schtick. its a lovely country with lovely people for the most part.

all this reminds me of Jez's "f*** You Bush" poem in peep show. its div shorthand for proving you are a left leaning liberal european without doing much thinking. look at those silly americans with their burgers big cars and health insurance. and their charm lack of snobbery and genuine open ness.

did you know most dont have passports hahahaha. imagine that how insular. how more sophisticated we are, the fact that we are less than 30 miles away from a foreign country never seems to come into it.

How did I know that would get a virtual immediate response.....the much hated, evil USA eh.

So the USA isn't part of the rest of the world is it?

mental isnt it. given the choice of most places in the world were british people forced to flee the country, they would be picking the english speaking countries slagged off during this debate. well maybe not HT but he has connections elsewhere.

its pure snobbery and mental considering the people who say stuff like that are often fairly well educated, in theory. we constantly look to america as its a global cultural force and far more so for us as its a former colony and we can easily understand what they are saying. there are plenty, plenty of far nastier countries full of really vile people but its just easier to pick america for all sorts of mixed up reasons.

I love America, and have always found them to be excellent, accomodating hosts.

The Americans you meet outside of their own country tend to grate much more. Perhaps that's true of everyone?

indeed sometimes i struggle with ex pat brits especially the constant sniping at the UK while sitting in a pub called the red lion watching the football.

but that said i dont find americans offensive at all, its generally british snobbery and jealousy as much as anything. the french however, different ball game.

Agree with most of that.

I think Americans here can be a bit brash for some English sensibilities!

One thing I find common in many Americans is a huge degree of naivety (and gullibility), which can be sometimes quite charming, but equally infuriating.

110% pal. it is nuts, if you look at my thread 248 I speak about Indians/Pakistanis/Nigerians that I know basically being positive about the English and England and all someone can do within 5 mins of that post is have a go at the Americans.

You are bang on though, such a response is just snobbery and arrogance in their own perceived superior intelligence (above Americans) pure and simple.

Quite a lot of Americans are closer than that to Canada. Quite a lot of other Americans are closer than that to Mexico. Lots of others are f***ing miles away. So what?

Having said that I've been to the States and have family there and, yes, they like us, yes it counts. I've also worked in Austrslia and India and got on great with my colleagues and they with me. The rest of the world does not hate us.

What this has to do with the fact that voters rights for Commonwealth citizens go back to the days where they had real links with England or that bushy's objections to this are founded on cultural imperialism and sweeping generalisation, rather than defending the white working class I'm not sure.

And all of it has f*** all to do with Scottish independence. Thread title change?
