Or to look another way:

David James - Getting too old
Joe Hart - Not experienced enough
Robert Green - Neither

Or the idea that dropping Green puts too much pressure on the untested Hart, but James has enough experience coming back from mistakes?

I would agree with James and Green. I would say (from Capello's comments) that Hart's inexperience isn't a problem. The fact that his kicks often go to the opposition or out for throw-ins is the main bar to his selection.

Norman Cook is on the BBC1 tellybox right now telling us that GREEN should start.

I'd go for Hart personally.

It's a strange one really. Either Green was Capello's number one or he wasn't.

That's not true though, is it. James apprently had a knee injury last week (although this was denied), so James could have been the no. 1 choice all along but Green was picked due to fitness.

if he'd taken a couple of decent CB's it wouldn't be such an issue would it...??

Given that he took almost every English* CB in the prem, who would you have recommended?

*he could have taken the German route, and selected Lucio and Vidic...

Yes but 'getting too old' isn't really an appraisal of competency to do the job? Dino Zoff was 40 when he won the world cup

But it does become an issue for goalkeepers if it leads to a loss of reaction speed, and any player if it leads to physical frailty.

How do you get experience if you don't get played? German keeper not exactly got bundles of caps of tournament experience

By playing in more of the friendlies, and qualifying games that prepare you for the major competition.

I'm not saying hat is ho I see it, just that it is a way to look at things. I personally would have gone with hart in the first game.

The point I was trying to make was that it is very easy to list one characteristic for each goalkeeper to make it seem like one of them is the more logical choice, and it's very naive to print one list and act like there's no other factor to take into consideration.
