Green previously had 'England's No 6' stitched into the back of his gloves. maybe Capello has seen this and realised there are 5 goalkeepers who he should have picked ahead of Green

Good. Green has always looked like a rabbit caught in the headlights when playing for England, I just don't think he's cut out for it. James is more talkative and always telling his defenders what's around them. Green merely whimpers. If that mistake has cost him his England career then GOOD, it was inexcusable.

Correct. He's a nice chap and a decent enough goalie but, as you say, not cut out for international football

How grimly depressing that we're actually RELIEVED at having David James back in goal.

Not at all, he's had a good couple of seasons at Portsmouth. Why not reserve judgement until after tonight's game?

Because I've already had the chance to judge him over his previous 50-odd caps, and he's never more than a brainstorm away from doing something utterly horrific.

Thats not to say I'd have been overjoyed to stick with Green either, but the lack of a world class keeper is a major, MAJOR flaw in this England team, and sadly I think it will cost us in the end. Not necessarily tonight, but somewhere along the line.

The last two semi-finals we've reached in 90 and 96, we've had a SUPERB goalie between the posts who has been on absolutely top form, and that just spreads confidence to the whole team. Its an ESSENTIAL ingredient to have in these tournaments, and unfortunately its something that we are missing now, big time.

With James you know that mistake is coming, its just around the corner.

Saying that I cant think of many, if any Howlers for England?

He's often gotten away with it through luck more than judgement, but I do recall a harrowing night in Vienna that we thought at the time had finally brought the curtain down on his England career.

He got back in the squad through default, there's just such a derth of talent now.

He got back in the squad through default though as nobody else has managed to step up to the plate, and there he's stayed.

O yeah.... I recall that game now.

I still think he should be our first choice.

Just looking at David James' career stats. He made his professional debut on 25th August 1990, when Joe Hart and Aaron Lennon were 3, and wayne Rooney was only 4 years old.

It is amazing that he has sustained a career at such a high level for so long.
