David Bowie

Me and my mate, who was a Bowie fanatic, used to play his CDs in the car when travelling to and from away matches. It was great singing along to his fantastic music.
Sadly my mate is now to ill to travel to those matches.

As well as David Bowie being a favourite of mine, another fave is Luther Vandross, who is a backing singer for the legend on Young Americans

Indeed. Apparently Luther was just training the backing singers and was not meant to be on the track. Bowie walked past the room they were rehearsing in and said he wanted Luther to be in the backing singers for the track.

He clearly was a superb talent. Openly bi attached time it was dangerous to admit it. Didn't play safe, always trying something new. There will be few who liked all his music, but there will be a large proportion of society who will adore part of his catalogue.

I may even forgive him tin machine.....

Probably in my view alongside the feelings had when lennon died. I can't think of another musician whose death has had this impact on me

Bowie's appeal came not just from music, but his constant invention (not reinvention), his boundary breaking celebration of the different at a time when it was not the easiest to be outside the norm or unconventional. A genuine inspiration to people, and some absolutely cracking music too.

A true genre straddling giant of music and contemporary culture.

Sorry to be a pedantic pete, but the last track of Blackstar is "I Can't Give Everything Away", which is utterly SUBLIME.

Didn't Bowie also cover a song that Luther Vandross wrote? I'm sure I read somewhere that he wanted to change the original lyrics and wasn't sure whether Luther Vandross would be ok with that. When Bowie asked his permission, Vandross told him something like "You're David Bowie, I live with my mother. Go ahead and change the words."

As usual can't really find the right words to say how I feel about this sad sad news. He was always there coming up with new ideas to challenge us, an absolute global superstar, I didn't like it all but his best songs are some of the best ever. RIP David
