The only Harveys you see in Worthing is the bog standard bitter and not that many bother with it to be honest. The Old occasionally gets in in a couple of pubs but that`s not in the same class as Dark Star`s Original which would be closest to it in style I suppose. I`m definetly in the Dark Star camp but then my local features their beers all the time so you get to try them.

I think Sussex needs more competition. I'm sure in the coming years a few more breweries will crop up giving you more variety.

I think Dark Star offer that variety and that`s what makes them such a good brewery. They do the usuals then the seasonals and then you get monthly specials. The Saison in march was lovely and this month they do an IPA before the Mild comes out in may. Then you have the Golden Gate and Sunburst in the next 4 weeks.
Shit its only 10 o`clock and I fancy a pint now.

I do appreciate what both bring to the scene, but Hophead seems to be the favoured ale of theirs which tastes to me like a tangy, creamy, sickly mess. Nothing can beat Harveys Best, Old, Porter and Armada in my mind.

:lolol: im not scared of change, honest! I was quite intrigued when I first discovered Dark Star but I haven't found an ale of theirs that I really like, though several that I find repulsive including Hophead, Festival and Espresso. Their bitter is OK...

I've spent the last 30 years as a Harveys disciple, but now that the Poacher puts the two side by side, I find I'm choosing Dark Star over Harveys nearly all the time.

I thought nobody could ever knock harveys off their perch, but I have voted Dark Star in this poll....

Dark Star do like their hops Notters and that may well be why you are not so keen. Now their bitter is one I can do without just because I find it a bit bland and like so many other middle of the range so so ales. Not bad just ordinary.
Try the Original Notters...............that`ll sort you out.

Can't remember whether I've had that or not, the APA's quite pleasant, I seem to recall.

I like them both and I think Hophead is really good, but I'm afraid I can't alter 35 years of drinking habits. Nothing beats a pint of Harvey's Best for me.

What makes me laugh is when you meet Yorkshiremen who swear that no decent beer is brewed outside their county, sorry to inform you gentlemen but most of what you produce is complete and utter piss...as this poll shows, a clash of titans, suvverners definitely know how to brew beer!

I was gutted when K&B closed down, their Old Ale was a joy to behold...how many breweries are there now in Sussex?

I dont like Harveys at all and every time I have drunk Dark Star I have got a little heady dont know whether it was too many or it doesnt agree with me so I tend to go for WJ Kings of Horsham.

I like the Bottle Wreck Porter 4.7% from Hammerpot. Very nice drop.

Under the sea
An interesting poll. I was at a funeral last week and in order to lighten the mood we had two kegs of beer for those gathered. One was of Harveys Sussex and the other was Dark Star Hophead. They both went fairly quickly but for me the Harveys had to be top choice. I genuinely rate Harveys Sussex as the nicest beer I know. It just always slips down with such ease and were I to move overseas proper English beer is one of the things I'd miss most

The seaside.
Dark Star's lager is very nice too

Dark Star stopped making lager (Natural Blonde) two or three years ago. They scrapped their keg wheat beer (Spiced Vice) and cider (Sea Cider) too, and now just concentrate entirely on cask (and a few bottled) ales.
