Mate they won't get much sympathy down here, they've been awful in this area recently, gangs of em robbing scooters off of the local kids, trying to rob houses (I caught 4 of them on my sons bedroom roof in the night) leaving shit (yes human shit) in the kids parks & plotting up right next to cemetery's..... They are not popular for reason

That's pretty despicable behaviour, and it's indefensible. But how do know that all that destruction was done by the travellers and not the local riff raff?

Well the kids all go to the same schools so they recognised some of the gang of kids who took the scooters off of them.

As for leaving crap in the park well the local kids couldn't use the playing fields for their usual footy & cricket training while the travellers were there but the day after they were evicted the kids had a footy training session & the parents found it all.

The ones on my roof were definatly not local, I live about 5 mins in between 2 sites they had plotted up on, I didn't recognise them from the Hollingbury/Patcham area & they had the accents when they were shouting for their mates.
They were deffo causing a lot of trouble while they were here & were getting caught doing it.

DG , your hearts in the right place mate, but come on ?

I suppose the point of this thread is the dale farmers, so going back to them. Yes they're breaking the law but it seems just so petty to me. To ruin the lives of these people for a few square foot of land, i mean who's happy at the end of the day? Nobody.

I haven't experienced anything like that myself, but I can't blame you for having a disliking for them because of what you just said. That is pretty vile stuff. But like any subculture, grouping, I try not to tar everyone with the same brush. The ones that were down my road left without a trace after 3 days, apart from breaking and entering the park, and apparently paid for the damage. Seemed a bit pointless breaking into the park when they have a site reserved for them down the road.

What do you expect ? He believes in some mthical diety so he's hardly grounded ibn reality.

Come on bha let's not get personal

I'm not saying there are not any decent ones but when you hear about things like this going on all over the country & then you witness it yourself you can't help but think well there must be a high number of these travellers living outside of the law & therefore won't be too chuffed when they turn up in there droves.
We have a permanent site up the road & then seem to have another 2 or 3 lots that just move from place to place around Brighton & wherever they turn up you can bet ya life you'll hear of all kinds of things going on.... Sad but true

Also I wouldn't use the term underdog when it comes to travellers as they seem to love the fact people are wary of them & also try to intimidate the local community so if that's how they want to play it then they can't moan when the tables are turned.
This isn't just my experience of them, it's a fact that is obvious when you watch documentaries about them.... All the fighting & family v family "dust ups" It seems confrontation is part of their way of life although I agree throwing them out of Dale farm doesnt seem the answer but then they can't be allowed to do as they please as they get away with enough as it is IMO

I think it is slightly important to note at this point that the great majority of travellers who were on the illegal part of the site have now left, or already had done prior to the bailiffs arriving.

The majority of the people on site today and yesterday are what some might term professional protestors: the sort who are frequently seen at other protests. The anarchists, anti-capitalists/anti-globalisation types, Smash EDO/UK Uncut, environmental/animal rights activists, and so on. Some people just want to turn a situation that is nothing to do with them into a fight with authority, specifically the police.

That photo of a woman standing holding a cross up in front of flaming wreckage yesterday: she's not a traveller. Nor are most of the ones who were up the scaffolding with masks on their faces.

In good news: Anyone see that bitchface Marina Pepper get trampled on by the police? Made my week!

Didn't see that bit but I heard she was one of the rent-a-protestors in the crowd. Shame.

Just a few weeks ago the Dale Farm community were congratulating the judiciary for a fair decision in the High Court and articulating that they would abide by whatever decision was made by the court. Ultimately, they thought they were a bit special and did not have to obey the decision and were not subject to the law of the land.

all you people sticking up for these vile pikeys, get a grip on yourselves and come back to the real world. They are a sponging group of lazy gits who should pay tax like everyone else.

Well said! Its very plain for most people to see that what you've just said is the case - what I'd like to see the the BBC and all press for that matter reporting it in that way.

What's personal about that ? It's a fact (unlike God of course).

Did I hear right? On the way back from the Amex today they said on the news that a lot of the travellers had left the illegal sites and moved to a legal site next door to them....can anyone tell me WHY they did'nt go to the legal sites in the first place?...the mind boggles....it seems they and their tree hugging mates just wanted to cause uproar...so the taxpayer...which they are not...has to fork out £18m.

All this talk of "sites" and "illegal occupation" (get a f*cking grip - it's not the west bank), it's worth pointing they own the land and have built homes on half the land without planning permission.

.. something some of our supermarkets haven't exactly been adverse to historically. I'm sure everyone is aware the supermarkets have on occasions built stores much bigger than the planning permission permitted. I don't recall a single occasion when the Police were sent in.

I haven't got a romanticised view of travellers/gypsies at all. I do understand that historically they have travelled for work etc.. but these days 50% don't because practically it doesn't make sense. Where they do differ from me is they want to live together in a tight community somewhat socially cut off. I don't understand but that's entirely up to them.

If they pitched up on some land I owned and refused to budge, I'd definitely have an issue. But they haven't- the land belongs to them.

Should they be building homes without planning permission ? No, of course not... and neither should supermarkets either. However, it appears they is one rule for one etc..

But (and it's a big one) - they are only doing what successive Governments have encouraged them to do - buy some land and build homes on it... and they've drastically reduced the number of "caravan" sites to make sure they do.

The problem is that 80% of Gypsy planning applications are turned down. Any ideas what the community is supposed to do ? I haven't.

Me thinks this situation was somewhat caused by politicians.

Wonder what Cameron thinks ? They are the very definition of "Big Society" and appear to disagree with the current complicated planning regulations.....

mmmm...
