Transition is essentially a car park for bikes and kit. It will have several lines of scaffolding bars to hook your saddle on in your position (which may be numbered). Put your helmet on your bars, number belt (get one - about £5 and will make your life so much easier!) in your helmet, and shoes on your carefully-placed towel next to your front wheel. If you happen you use a brightly-coloured towel (obviously only to stand on and dry your feet with) all the better; although it is against the rules to 'mark' you place in transition a towel IS allowed (and bloody helpful when you get back in from the bike leg - looking for your bike when you're holding it will not aid your race!) You don't HAVE to run in the bike shoes - a fast walk will probably suffice. Put your running shoes (with elastic laces in) behind your bike shoes. If the bike shoes are Velcro-fastening only you can (so I'm told!) attach them to the pedals pre-race and slide your feet in on the move. I've never done this, but have slid my feet out and run barefoot back into T2. Re-hook your bike in the same place, slip on the running shoes and enjoy the jelly-leg pain!

What race are you doing?
My advice is to get there early and have a good survey. Arundel Tri is about 10 yards from transition to bike mount so running in SPD-SL cleats is OK. Hatfield is about 200 yards! If I ever do that one again I will carry the shoes.

Fabulous finish to today's Tour of Poland.

DO NOT SEE A SPOILER, JUST WATCH THE LAST 10KMS.

Funnily enough I just watched the last 2km (that's all they had) on steephill before coming on here.

100% agreed, well worth watching without the spoiler. I just wish I'd found the 10km highlight version first.

I don't know if there are 10km highlights, I was watching live.

It's just that the race didn't really get animated until that point.

Oh yeah, forgot about those postie hours of yours. Unfortunately I don't have that luxury or else I would have watched too I expect. It's got to the point with me now that if I was given a straight choice between watching football or cycling then I wouldn't even have to consider for a minute which one I'd choose. I couldn't have dreamed that a few years ago when it was basically just my annual TdF viewing to last me a whole season.

Day off today, hence my mucky paw prints up and down this board, (my last post in 'Lance' is well worth catching up on)

Although I would have been home in time to watch anyway :p

Oh and it goes:-

Albion - any cycling - American football - a good drama - porn (I'm getting on) - Horrible Histories!! - soccerball.

Evening all. Quick question again - mate has asked me to do a sportive with him. My immediate reply was that I'm unfit at the moment. However, I was wondering what kinds of average speeds get knocked out on these sportives?

There for all comers it just depends how competitive you are.

Have a look at the sportive in question it may well have time bands.
From memory a high teen average will be gold, low teen bronze.

The question you need to ask yourself is:-

'could you cope with being overtaken by all shapes and sizes while pootling along because you're unfit?'.
An excessively large amount of money says 'NO'!!.

Do it, it'll be fun but you're going to ache in the morning!

Oh and geek 'lore dictates, in it to win it.

So after soft pedalling around Poland (and Italy) for a week with Nibs and co., Wiggins takes the TT victory, putting nearly a minute into Spartacus, and over a minute into Phinney & Pinotti. That's encouraging at least. Nibali no interest at all here, which is a shame as was hoping to see if he'd try out his new found TT abilities again. Weening takes the GC, overturning the advantage Riblon had going into today.

Highlight from the very brief highlights I saw of this Tour has to be Phinney's amazing solo effort to hold off of the sprinters right at line on stage 4 :clap2:

Silly question I know, but presumably you're talking mph there and not kmph? For a very brief while an unfit old timer who insists on working to kmph so he can relate it to what the pros do had his hopes raised

Yeah you ain't getting an acknowledgment for an 8mph average!!
A little way off the pros.

Evans have a 15 mile 'family fun' course on their event at Plumpton in a couple of weeks.

Ah. (Was unsure about that definition.) Was that down to under prepping, or is that obvious?

I suppose it was down to under preparing, but mainly because I'm a relative novice I guess I don't really know my bodies capabilities. I've done longer rides, but have always had a proper stop on those, on this one I wasn't intending to stop. So I guess I now know that after 2 hours I either need to stop or otherwise do much more fueling while on the bike.

Teaboy and m20gull - Thanks for the transition advice. I'm based in the West Country, it's a sprint tri round South Cerney that I'm doing. Registration is the day before the event and I believe they give short coaching session, so I should have a chance to check out the transition then, let's hope it's a fairly short one! I have very securely fitting road shoes, so can't see myself slipping them on or off while on the bike.

Gawd bless jnr stat.

I he's 'needed' a cycling jersey for ages and I finally got round to sorting him out last night.
I gave him the option of a plain red Altura child specific jersey that would properly fir.

Or, knowing at XS it was still too big, did he want a gamble on some flair, and hope it just fits.

He chose the flair.

OGE keep on finding results with their unfashionable stable of riders. They must be on something! :lolol:

Their women's team have been going damn well too. Espeically this young lady. When she comes to my home town for an event I'll follow her much closer...

Emma Johansson is AWESOME on a bike. :)

Orica-AIS's Loes Gunnewijk beaten into 5th in London yesterday though, as Laura Trott takes the win at the Prudential Ride London Grand Prix. Good showing by Hannah Barnes (2nd), Australia's Loren Rowney (3rd) and Danni King (4th), but a suspected broken collarbone for Jo Rowsell.

Little and often is the mantra for fueling on the bike.
Assuming you've porridged and fluided before you've set off, a slurp and a bite of something every 15 minutes will keep you going like a Duracell bunny.

Once you get into a deficit, then your fuel tank will empty quickly.

That's all assuming your riding to a pretty high tempo.

I think you've hit the nail on the head there. I can get round 60 miles at 17mph these days but the competitive edge is still there!

I'd hazard a guess 17mph will squeak you close to 'gold standard', maybe 1mph off.
But if you don't want to be overtaken you're looking at around 20mph.

Oh and it's no use shouting 'do you know who I am', cos they don't!! :lolol:.

I hope you're doing it, you'll love it.
Don't let my bravado put you off.

It's great to be out with a good few hundred like minded people, and a few knobs!.

There's always a great atmosphere around the start/finish, with a fair bit of bike porn, to boot.
