Might be different if we had Wood available or somebody of that ilk who offers something particularly different, but I'm not sure a few overs of 80ish mph seam bowling would achieve much in this situation.

I don't think Pakistan bowled a single over with a seamer did they?
True.

Since a handful of fruitless overs from Jamal at the start of the last Test, they've been bowling spinners for approx the last 150 overs

I did find it amusing to hear the music on the loud speaker..

'He drinks a whisky drink, he drinks a lager drink....'

I don't think he does somehow :ROFLMAO:

I see New Zealand are 300runs ahead with 5wickets left at stumps on day 2 of their 2nd test in India.

Mitchell Santner took 7/53 to bowl India out for 156. His previous best innings figures in tests were 3/34.

Just to hopefully put the wicket keeper thing to bed. Smith dropped a straight forward chance off Saud when he was on 26. He now has a big ton now. I don't think Foakes would have missed that.
Smith missed the chance - but he also single-handedly kept England's hopes of winning the Test alive, with a brilliant counter-attacking innings.

Unless you are absolutely confident that Foakes could have done the same, then it really doesn't put anything to bed!

Have to disagree with the RtHon member there. He did indeed play a splendid innings but, over the long term, the value of those extra 10 runs an innings is far outweighed by missed chances, byes and, like the village attempt that was missed in the last Test, stumpings.

This isn't looking good. Pope is such a confusing batsman. Such a quality player who keeps failing. Ramprakash the Second.

Let's be clear - I am very much on the same page as you on the 'specialist keeper v middle order batter with some old keeper gloves' debate.

I just don't think that a match in which said batter scores a ton of runs, is the one that settles the argument!

(FWIW I actually think Foakes is a much under-rated batter himself, especially in tough conditions)

Is the lad Rew at Somerset not supposed to be the next big wicket-keeping hope?
I've heard about him, but he's notably younger than Smith and Cox and only averaged mid 30s with the bat last season, so I can see why they're not throwing him in straightaway. For comparison, Cox averaged 65 and scored 4 hundreds to Rew's 2.

I'd guess his time will probably be after we get trounced on the next Australia tour, unless he has an outstanding winter and start to next season.

WTF is Pope even doing in this team?
His contribution has been virtually zero.

Highest score 29 and a total of less than 60 in 6 innings. Not good enough.
Everyone blaming Smith for a missed chance but Pope has dropped some clangers too.
