That is exactly my first thoughts when I read his testimony. I haven’t got to any other posts but I reckon he’s a gutless git. He saw what was happening and had time to react on his own - forget the others in the car - but did nothing. My daughter was in the next road the night of the London Bridge stabbings and she was in a terrible state when she rang. If those guys hadn’t been attacked by people in the streets then it could have got worse. I don’t even like thinking about it. They were heroes but this particular boy in blue was certainly not.

He didn't have to go in all king-fu or all-in-wrestler, all he had to do was make a difference... give the assailant an alternative target, distract him, make him hesitate... that may well have been enough to save the other officer's life. All he had to do was get out the car and shout something, he could have done that without getting any closer, endangering the others in the car. Given the whole incident was over in under 90 seconds, Mackey should have had the instinct or at least the training to know that he had to do something!

Most people wouldn't have the balls to step up and physically tackle a knife-weilding nutter, those that do are rightly called heroic. But... some people are trained to react in a certain way, some are expected to step up and some will do what little they can to try to save another person's life. Mackay was the first and certainly was the second but didn't have the balls for the third. Not fit to wear the uniform IMHO.

If he wants to be a politician then he should be a politician, he certainly shouldn't be a Police Officer.

Sums up it well. At least cause a distraction even if it’s screaming abuse and chucking whatever comes to hand. He is a senior officer in the met and with that comes responsibility, which he failed to fulfill. At a minimum he should of taken charge of the scene and ensure that members of the public were escorted away, or attempt to administer first aid.
Sitting in car with the doors locked is a shitty thing to do.

imho he made a very bad choice to remain in his car and lock it. he would have had training to deal with many harrowing situations. he bottled it. others would have gone in and helped their colleagues without a second thought for their own safety. there are those of us on here that have had military training and wouldn't think twice about our fellow 'mates' and would not hesitate to go to their aid. he will have to live with the fact that he did what he did.

but it is not the movies and he did not know the scale of the attack at the time, which is a hard call to make on the ground.

But that’s the point. A person of his rank and training is expected to make the call in this situation. If he can’t then who can!?
A quick ‘stay in the car and lock the doors, I’ll be back when I can’ would have sufficed.

Granted. Having re-read it though, it was 82 seconds between the killer driving his car into the crowd, to the point he himself was shot dead.

Let's guess at 30 seconds for him to have got out of the car and start waving his knives about. Take off another ten seconds from the point Mackey saw the armed officers run past the car. You're left with 40 seconds in which he has to take stock of the situation and decide a course of action.

I'm neither defending or castigating the bloke - I just think that trying to second guess the right course of action months later, at your leisure, with the benefit of hindsight (you know there were no other attackers, that there was no explosives, etc) in the comfort of your office chair, isn't really fair.

You talk of the response you expect of a trained soldier / officer, and I understand, of course. I'm also pretty sure that even soldiers, despite their obvious natural reaction to a comrade in peril, are NOT trained to jump in without assessing the situation first?

You can’t assess the situation in a car with the doors locked. The simple act of getting out of the car and putting yourself in the view of the attacker will change the dynamics of the situation. He is after all paid to ‘keep the piece’

It’s a good job Lisa Potts didn’t hesitate to consider that she didn’t have any equipment, a lot of nursery school kids would have died. This young lady has more guts in her toenails than Mackey.

I have noticed from the posts on this thread that ex- Service personnel are more critical of Mackey than the civvies, is it down to training, attitude, or espirit de Corp.

As you know Alf, we disagree about a huge range of subjects, but you are spot on , on this one.
If I was a serving Plod, I wouldn’t be able to hide my utter contempt for this man.

I was just going to ask how he can work again with no respect from those he is supposed to be leading. Only he knows the truth, ie what he was thinking at the time, was it a conscious decision or a gut reaction, what he would have done differently, etc, etc.

All we can hope is that the truth comes out first time, and not another Hillsborough.

I’ve thought about this quite a bit before replying. My considered thoughts are that there were a number of reactions and responses he could have undertaken, all with varying levels involvement and engagement and degrees of risk, . He could have even paniced and shat himself and I would have understood. But he calmly locked his doors and drove off. I can’t imagine nurses, other police officers, armed forces or firemen running the other direction.
