There has been the rumour that Coppell did not really want to go and that the club liked the idea of getting some compensation from Reading more than retaining the manager.

sounds like complete rubbish to me, We did'nt get much compensation and only would've got a decent payout if he was contracted for 2+ years...which he was'nt! He jumped ship because "the lack of stadium & crappy trainging facilities" trump card was still in his pocket...simple!

Or did DK make no effort to stop Coppell going?

He almost saved us from relegation, started us off in Div2 very well including the signing of Leon Knight - yeah ok let him go and we'll start the search for another manager all over again!

Sorry Icy but I shall choose to disagree with that :)

Umm we got nearly 300k for SC.

I fail to see why that would've been a reason "to let him go", even in our financial plight in the long run keeping him here would've been greater in the long run (financially wise)

The reality is all capital is tied up in the Falmer project, the injection of cash was welcome and DK thought he has appointed 3 good managers in recent years, he could do it again, pay him under 100k, that leaves 200k to keep things ticking over.

Taylor's brief was to get us promoted and then discuss a contract. Which part didn't he fulfill?
Uhhh, I'd say the 2nd part.

I have no inside knowledge, it was just something I'd heard. Remember that DK "allegedly" didn't even get back to Coppell the time that he appointed Hinshelwood. If that was the case maybe Coppell felt he really didn't owe DK that much if he wasn't going to make a big effort to keep him?

Having said that I'd always thought Coppell was one of the few people left in the game who was honourable, no longer convinced on that though.

So he didn't discuss a contract based on money available and then turn it down as not enough? I thought the whole reason he left revolved around that?

Ditchy . . .I most certainly was not . . . . truth be told footballs taken a back seat this year for various reasons . . . . . . but I still keep abreast of happenings, although I dont think Id ever lower myself to ranting on a mickey mouse radio station, lifes too short for such pointless activities

good point, at this stage in our life we do need things to tick over nicely. Maybe seeing that we did'nt have an investment in a player after BZ went we only had it in a manager, could well of been his thinking your right.

Still no one here knows exactly why, maybe we should set up a Q&A session with NSC & DK just to get all the answers to the multitude of questions that are asked on here :)

Taylor left in perfectly reasonable circumstances, and I don't feel too bad about the way MA left either, although the way he was touting for a better job while still with The Albion was a bit unsavoury.

On the other hand, Coppell is a turncoat who jumped as soon as he could, having been rescued from the scrapheap by DK. And he let at least one of his own players down in doing so.

Well I dunno what PT was expecting in the way of transfer funds, but he knew damn well the situation the club was in, so if he was expecting another £7m to blow on the likes of Akinbiyi then no doubt he was sadly disappointed.

PT let the club down. Fair enough, he kept us on course for promotion that season (With Mickys team) when there was still plenty of time for it to go pear shaped. And he did at least tell us early in the summer that he was chickening out (even though Dick ended up pissing that summer up the wall anyway). But the abiding memory is that PT chickened out and jumped ship without even ATTEMPTING Division One with us. Adams took on the shittest football club in the entire LEAGUE, and turned them into winners.

Taylor is not fit to lick Adams's boots.

He saw out his contract, he gave us the WHOLE summer to find a replacement (none of this Coppell will/won't he shambles) and he'd got us promoted the previous season. He's no favourite of mine, but I still fail to see anything wrong with his conduct.

taylor leaving annoyed me more - especially as he didnt even have another club - he expected the big offers to come flooding in..

Assistant England managers job straight after the World Cup. But then the guy let him down by not leaving until October and he had gone to Hull by then.

PT definitely jumped ship.

Coppell said we hadn't got the lowest budget in Division 1. He had no reason to say that if it wasn't true.

What has happened since Coppell left I think proves what a good job Taylor did. I believe we had just lost to Brentford at home and were third. We then won a much better division than it is now by a margin.

I will happily stand in the minority who considers Peter Taylor a better coach than MA. Nothing I say will convince you otherwise and viceversa.

Getting back to my original point, all I am saying is that, in my opinion:

Coppell let us down
Taylor let us down
Horton let us down

as they all walked out on the club after a very short period of time in charge. Yes, they all left for differing reasons (although they all boiled down to the same thing - we're homeless and penniliess), but they all let us down.

Adams does not belong in that list, because he stayed the course and rejuvinated the club from top to bottom. Adams left with my thanks - none of those others did.

Taylor gave us Div 1 Football for the first time in a decade, the reason we didn't stay up was because DK appointed the right man 3 months too late, not because Taylor left.

Ill feeling towards Taylor leaving us is unjustified especially when compared to what Coppell did.
