Coppell or McGhee?

There are players who reckon that McGhee is the best manager they have ever played for. They have also gone on record as saying they are fitter than ever before in their playing career.

I liked Coppell but prefer McGhee.

Both managers have their good and bad points. If you look at what McGhee has done with gambling on Tank (from KFC munching reserve to player of the season), Currie, the youth players (Harding, Virgo, El Abd, Hinsh) then its a big hats off to the pints of whisky drinker, especially when we have sold two excellent players in DC and Currie, had FOUR players retire in a season, our keeper injured, and only be able to sign freebies and the unwanted. Victories against Leeds, Forest, West Ham, Sunderland, Leicester, all clubs with Premiership history, are amazing. Minus points are his prickly relationship with Leon (though this may well be justified given LK's 'previous') and some signings where the jury is still out (Nicholas, McCammon)

Coppell made some excellent loan and freebie signings (Sidwell. Ingmarsson, Beasant, Jolly and Blackwell) and did have a better squad to deal with for the whole season (BZ, Brooker, Cullip, Kitson (when not injured or at the bookies).

Our players can read? ;)

That really is a snide and smug comment Richie. It is widely known that Charlie is dyslexic and has reading problems BUT is attending courses to try to rectify this.

You come along with a superior comment clearly aimed at the boy Oatway. I bet you are chuckling away to yourself for that like the stuck up Tory Boy that you are.

You should be ashamed of yourself.

Spot on El P. Snide and completely unnecessary.

As for the original question, McGhee for me, by a long way.

Zamora also wants to go to Reading because of Coppell

Is that a fact or a guess and will he still want to do that if W Ham go up thru the playoffs?

I thought we did the McGhee/Coppell discussion to death on NSC a month ago when Reading came calling, but I guess 4 pages show this subject still fascinates. I can understand why, both are fine managers but their approaches differ slightly, which makes for an intriguing comparison and good debate.

If McGhee keeps us up, I think he wins hands down though. In fact it will be the greatest single season's achievement by an Albion manager since the 70s/80s glory years. If McGhee just falls at the last hurdle as Coppell did, the debate remains more even, but still slightly loaded in McGhee's favour by virtue of the promotion, the youth development, the transfer fee income rescuing the club at a key time and our dwindling budgets six years into internal exile at Withdean. Coppell remains a class act though, whatever your judgement of how good McGhee is.

Nope its what one of the players who still talks to him told me on moday

Don't you think this might queer Leon's pitch at Reading though? Or can you see Zamora/Knight relegating Kitson/Forster to the reserves, if they get past Owusu/Morgan first? What games will Leon realistically get?

Cracking response. So you and TWO others have nothing constructive to add so have a pop at me instead and that suddenly makes a sensible thread attention seeking.

Fine.

You MUST be right.

Who said anything about a fine and sensible thread .. Its just you and the way you like to start one or hijack the sensible thread .. Comments above about Charlie prove that .. nothing sensible to say so lets gets some attention by having a pop at someone else

Coppell:
Pros:
short term signings worked out well
Nearly saved us from relegation
left us in a very strong league position

Cons:
Not interested in playing youth team players
loyalty
our matches were fairly dull to watch

Mcghee

Pros:
Developing our players skills
giving youth players a chance
Playoff finals
Loyalty to the club
At times we play some very good football

Cons:
some dubious signings
playing people out of position
Criticising players in the media
strange tactical decisions

For the record Coppell did f*** all except get us relegated. How do you work out hes better because of that?

Hmm ... created the best team I've seen at the Albion. This relegation thing is ridiculous, has anyone seriously forgotten the fact we had FOUR points from FOURTEEN games? He did amazingly well to get us in contention. And not playing Virgo is a non-issue as well; he brought together an experienced defence that looked superb together. Was Virgo any better than Cullip, Blackwell or Ingimarsson?

Certainly Coppell for me.

Surely that's backwards? We played the best football I've seen at this club under Coppell. Whether it's effective or not, McGhee's hoof-ball can get a bit tedious.

Honestly that was not meant as a dig at Charlie and it wasnt until reading your post this morning that I even thought about Charlie's problems.

You wont believe me but for the record it was just a throw away comment not aimed at anyone in particular, certainly not Charlie who I have the upmost respect for.

Appologies.

I think my main defence is does anyone actually think I would be clever enough to make that link?

Thought not.

On this occasion I was a GOON but without meaning to be.

Sorry.
