Coppell or McGhee?

I will no doubt be flamed for saying this but I think it is becoming more obvious how much better a manager Coppell was then McGhee.

You only have to look on the Leon Knight thread to see that many feel Coppell managed to get the best out of Knight in a way McGhee has not yet managed.

He had us playing attractive football and had the contacts to get quality players into the club.

McGhee strikes me as being a lucky manager and he does well at working with what he has. It is clear he has helped Hinsh and Virgo come on in leaps and bounds but it does not seem he is capable of bringing in players to take us that step further.

I also worry about his laid back attitude in public. "two more wins should do it" "four draws will do it" "one win will do it".

McGhee has done a good job but I cant help feeling we really missed out when Coppell went.

Coppell has gone ..forget him...With Knight you may be right but MM has got more out of other players, Coppell also had more money so it is not a level playing field
live in the present not the past...we have had plenty of good managers and there will be plenty more

I think both were right at the time. We are much more limited financially now than we were when Coppell was in charge, so I don't think his extensive contacts would be much good now whereas McGhee knows that he basically has to work with what he's got which is something he is good at.

Conversely when we did have a little more cash a couple of years ago Coppell was excellent as he got some good players onboard who played excellent football and gave us a very good chance of staying up from a position where we looked utterly dead and buried when he took over.

We have weaker squad than we did under Coppell and have accumulated more points at this point of the season.

We were also in a better financial state then, which helped Coppell no end. Mghee will have just as many contacts but not the money to spend.

McGhee has done a fantastic job and I'd rather have him than Coppell.

Leon was playing in a lower division when Coppell was in charge. I believe the problem is that he has found playing at this level a lot more difficult.

Leon's problem is Leon, not the manager.

Out of interest, on what basis does this assumption that Coppell had more money come from? He brought in some senior pro's (Blackwell and Rodger), but they were not the highest earners and when they resigned for us last season it was at about 40% less than their original deals. From what I remember the fans paid the wages of Roberts and Rougier (TLO?). So that means a couple of loan signings were also paid for. Like McGhee he never spent a fee and sold our best player for £1.5m but never got a penny of that for the team.

Ritchie, I have to say that accusations of you being an attention seeker are beginning to become just a liitle accurate.

Do you think in our present situation we would be able to pay the wages of players of the calibre of Sidwell and Ingimarsson then?

Just the fact that we've had an extra two seasons losing money every home game plus Inquiry costs etc. is bound to have impacted on the playing budget.

I don't think Guy Butters would vote for Coppell.

We were offered Owusu - Abeyie on loan so must have been able to afford him who is currently in a similar position in Arsenal's reserves as Sidwell was at the time.

I have to say I think Coppell may have had a few more pennies and a bit more luck than McGhee has had (injuries) so it's quite hard to compare the two.

And so my input to this merry go round thread ends.

We also, seemingly went after a couple of more experienced forwards on deadline day who would not be asking for peanuts.

But the NSC view is things are worse, so you must not question anything or the shitty stick will be dug out and the great, good and sanctimonious will take it in turns to beat you with it....

:dunce: Do you really think we would pay all of his salary?:shootself

I notice you don't mention how Coppell made good use of Virgo as a defender let alone a striker.

Coppell has gone why harp back. If so why not compare him to Steve Gritt and the resources he had? :p

Sidwell was a bit more established wasn't he. Had been on loan to Brentford fo example.

Dick found the money to put in an offer for him. We wouldn't be able to do that now.
