Completely false position

I can't be bothered to read all these doom and gloom threads, because they're nonsense. This is the biggest false position season I have experienced so far. There is no way we will stay where we are, and I fully expect us to be in the top ten by the end of October.

Through injuries and suspensions we have yet to field a settled defence for more than a couple of games and when this comes so will the points. Murray could yet start firing and I see the rest of the team gelling. We have had a lot of games we could have won, with some luck, and it is only a matter of time before that changes. I am not worried at all.
Absolutely agreed, although as mentioned above the discipline issue needs sorting sharpish.

We'll be fine but we have to stop beating ourselves. To have 5 players sent off in 10 games is suidical. Likewise the way we have continued to concede such soft goals. Our decision making in such situations has been poor. Another concern is there's no leadership on the pitch nor has there been for a very long time. I'm right behind Slade but he needs to sign a wise old head at centre half to play alongside Tunnicliffe or Virgo. Elphick has gone backwards this season and shoud be rested. And this signing, Slade must go and get someone NOW on loan if needs be, should also be a leader, capable of vocal encouragement and to dish out some stick when needs be.

I really think we're one or two players away from being a decent side.

I wouldn't say it it a completely false position, we are in the bottom four by virtue of not picking up enough points. You can try and dress that up with as many positives as you want but the fact will still remain.

I agree that now is not the time for doom and gloom, but we have to face up to the fact that at the moment we are not good enough. Suspension and injuries hit every club and you have to deal with them in a positive way. If you start using it as an excuse for poor performance then we are in trouble.

If luck 'evens itself out over the season' and 'has to be earned' then the rest of the season will see us shooting up the table :clap2:

Seriously, we have a team which is far superior to the last few years. We have had wretched luck with injuries to the full backs. In several matches we have not got the result our play has deserved, often because of individual errors. But eventually we are going to start getting the rub of the green, because we have earned it in my view.

I agree we have some good players and also a decent squad, however were we not in a similar position at this point last season?

I think our season so far has really shown the strengths and weaknesses of the squad. Plenty of strenght in midfield, and good going forward.

We seem to be weak in the centre of defence and this must be addressed immediately. Slade can say the sending off changed the game, but I think another piece of poor defending cost is AGAIN today. We played better with 10 than we did with 11!

I completely agreed with the thread title, for most of last season.

It's now Oct, a full season on, and we are still 'in a completely false position'.

Or are we?

Agreed. This season (so far) has started similarly to last, and we know what happened then.

I love Big Russ and really hope things improve soon.

Too many people clutching at straws. I haven't seen any progress since going to Worthing for a pre season friendly. Not scoring enough goals, weak defence & lack of goal scoring chances & awful discipline. It pains me to say this but we are a bottom 6 team. Bottom 4 if Forster gets an injury.

We played with 10 men for 65 minutes and still had more shots than the team in 5th and drew with 10 men for 45 mins against 3rd place. I think we'll come good.

If we had 11 v 11 today for 90 mins we wouldnt have lost, I dont think. But if you don't think we are good enough? We'll just have to wait and see over the next coming month.

i wish i could agree with the threads sentiment but i cant, saying we could of won with some luck is a bit wishy washy ,we are in this position because we are not as good as the team that beats us on the day we play them, dosnt matter what we have on paper or how shit the ref is ,at the end of the day its down to the players on the pitch the manager has selected for that game,no excuses we are not consistantly good enough atm to warrant a higher league position. Wont stop me going to the games because i honestly believe we have a bloody good squad for this league but we really do need to buck our f***ing ideas up and quick.

We're not in a false position, we've lost half of our games. Its not 'bad luck' to have had five players sent off, its bad discipline. Having said that, I agree with the premise of the thread, this doesn't feel like we will keep bumping along the bottom like some relegation seasons we have had. The combination of new players, working out the best team, injuries and suspensions in defence means we have barely played our best team so far, so things have to improve. And whilst having five players sent off isn't bad luck, its highly unlikely to keep happening to us.

The danger is that, like last season, players heads go down, confidence goes and we end up stuck in a rut. So a good October is pretty essential for us or it will be a very long season.

Thank you for that post Giraffe.
The light at the end of the tunnell is NOT an oncoming locomotive, it's the Albion's TEAM PLAY of the last half a dozen games.

Pre-season I predicted that we'd be at the wrong end of the table until about the 12th game and then things would improve dramatically, see no reason not to still believe this will be the case.

Comparing this season to last, we started well and went into freefall with virtually no positives, managed by a man who'd clearly lost the plot. This season I can see lots of positives although we are currently in a similar position in the table to last season. I know I'm, possibly, in the minority but I reckon we have our best squad for years and look forward to some good football and a steady rise up the table.

Slade is doing OK if not spectacularly so far, it's coming together and I'm enjoying our overall play more than I have for years.

You see? Now THAT is a sensible post, half way between the totally moronic "We're shit! Sack Slade!" and the slightly reality-denying "We're in a false position, we're actually a really good side!"

To be honest losing at home to MK Dons is 'sort of' expected. They're a good team and it's the kind of game where a home draw is actually a pretty good result. However we haven't just played the top teams, we've also played Walsall, Southend, Stockport and Wycombe at home. One defeat against those four is perhaps acceptable, after all we're not going to win every 'winnable' game, but THREE defeats is bad, and whilst saying "It'll all work out fine" is being marvellously positive the people who are sounding a small note of caution can't all be lumped in with the wankers*

We are where we are because of discipline and the players have to take responsibility for that not Slade. What can Slade do about incidents like yesterday 'oh Adam by the way if a ball is bouncing about two feet off the floor remember not to lunge in with your studs up'!

Take yesterdays game we actually started brightly and took the game to MK Dons. Up until (and even in a few spells after) the sending off we created good chances and moved the ball well. Going forward we looked productive but when anyone with pace runs at our back four we look seriously vulnerable which needs to be addressed.

Overall as a squad we are better equipped for league one this season and whilst I don't think we will be marching off into the playoffs I have seen enough from this squad to say we will be comfortably mid table at the least when the season ends.

I think what many people are trying to say is that, although we're in a similar position to last season, the team looks significantly better, & as though they are at least capable of getting it together when they finally stop making stupid errors. Adams' side of last year simply looked clueless & incapable of doing anything about it.

We have some more than useful midfielders, and i'd fancy any one of the three strikers we had on the pitch at the end of yesterday's game over any of the ones MK had out there. We have to find an experienced centre half to replace Elphick or Virgo alongside Tunnicliffe, get our full backs fit (though Bennett did superbly yesterday) and maybe look at the goalkeeper too.
