Would have seemed unthinkable even 12 months ago, but I have it on good authority that part of their restructuring plan is to shutter all European operations and focus their dwindling resources in the US in an attempt to revive their north American business. (Unless of course they file for bankruptcy first). Europe will be the preserve of the French, German and Italian auto makers, whilst the Americans will retreat back across the Atlantic. The UK car market has ground to a halt; car dealers will drop like flies in the next few months and without a large dealer network they have no way of shifting the volume of cars they need to sustain anything like a viable manufacturing plan.
Don't buy a Ford if you plan on them being here to honour any 3 year warranties...

Ford to announce 800 redundancies in Southampton today (although I have been told the actual figure will be closer to 1000 - 1100).
UK car sales down 24% YoY in December, and figures for January will be down 30% YoY. Only repeating what I have been told by informed sources, but they are on the brink.

It's going to have a really catastrophic effect round here. I can see the ford factory from my window, and most people around here work for them. They've reduced the amount of cars made, and the deliveries that they do already - it's very noticeable, before christmas they were doing 3 dispatches a day of loads of vans, now it's just once a day with only a few. This area is very deprived already, and this will made it 10 times worse.

No way WH Smiths will go, they have a monopoly on Newspaper and Magazine distribution. They may scale down in areas, but they are pretty stable.

I would actually say less and less will go to the wall now as (although only slightly and slowly) banks are beginning to lend as are the government, stabalising businesses that rely on borrowing for liquid cash. Also UK Factors are doing very well out of factoring debt which buys companies time.

My list would be full of companies that provide the more expensive option to ordinary people like Next or some small independant stores

I too have heard that Fords International business ids overexposed and likely to get binned.

Last year when I lived in Hutton near the UK Headquarters there were loads of Americans and others working around the area for Ford on contracts...they've all gone now.

If people aren't moving then surely they'll improve what they've got? I expect the DIY stores generally to manage, maybe the likes of Wickes that supply trade will feel it though.

Owned by Travis Perkins, Bought for £900 million and lost the TP group £400 million in the first year!

B&Q are going down the pan as well.

TP group shares were £28 a share a year ago now valued at £2.50 a share. Not a good buy by TP!!

No they don't!!

Dawson news supply WH Smith with their newspapers and supply over 70% of independants as well.

Almost a monopoly to the point that they can dictate terms.

WH Smith, by their actions, can send any number of magazine publishers to the wall - not necessarily maliciously - if they so felt.

But the only reason they would is to be malicious, and to increase the market share but i can't see it happening.

The internet means i haven't bought a paper for over 3 years and i subscribe directly for my magazines as it is so much cheaper.

The last report i saw they were stating 20% of the top 1,000 company would go under and 35% of all businesses would go in this country.

As a WHSmith worker i know for certain we will still be here next year. We are opening up more stores here and abroad and profits have only slightly fallen since last year so we are doing reasonablly well
