wonder did they buy the "Wellworths" brand off Asda, who I think eventually ended up owning it after a surreal takeover chain. Wellworths were one of the biggest supermarket chains in Northern Ireland that went through a Safeway->Morrisons->Asda ownership deal...

Capita do a fuckload more than collect the TV licence. Not going anywhere.

Ryanair are likely to clean up as smaller budget airlines hit the wall. Their major domestic competitor (who they own a sizeable amount of actually) lost 108 million euros; Ryanair made 250m profit in the same period. Not going anywhere.

BT - extremely unlikely. Ireland's incumbent operator Eircom is, however, rogered. Its parent firm went in to liquidation today with an expected return per share of.... zero australian cents.

4 pages and no one has mentioned any Housing developers or the like ....... personally i think one or two of the major players might go to the wall, there debts are mounting, and new home buying has not really improved, in fact it has probably got slightly worse.

As a WHSmith worker i know for certain we will still be here next year. We are opening up more stores here and abroad and profits have only slightly fallen since last year so we are doing reasonablly well

Whereabouts do you work?

I also work for them, and have no reason to worry about my job security, although I'd heard nothing of opening new branchs abroad.

WH smiths is the retail company, Smiths news is the wholesale and distribution company. They are two seperate entities since 2006 ? ish.

Dawson News aren't the biggest distributor, they are the smallest of the big three, Smiths news, Menzies and Dawsons. Dawsons tend to stick to the south (or south of manchester), Menzies are bigger in the north and scotland and Smiths cover the lot.

Oh, and just for completeness, the publishers hold the whip hand in that relationship - not the distributors

................carry on

Northwich victoria fc - heard they are going into administration in the next week (altringham and Greys are also on the brink)

Blockbusters - US based operations are looking at their options, including going into administration - if they do go, the UK branches could follow

But of all the clubs that go into administration, how many actually 'die'? Leeds, Leicester, Bournemouth, Luton, Rotherham, etc, etc are all still here. Almost all of them get rescued somehow, unlike the high street businesses.

Thats true but I have a nasty feeling that a lot of clubs might "die" in this recession

agreed - look how hard Lewes are finding it to find a new owner / financial backer to replace the bankrupt Martin Elliott

The Dixons Stores Group (which is also Currys and PC World) is struggling.

BT - extremely unlikely.
BT wont disappear , the Government has recently drawn up plans to renationalise BT in a worst case scenario. The BT pension fund is likely to have a £10bn deficit when the actuaries report is given later in the year. My worry is that if the share price plummets even more and hits single figures , the Government will intervene and the pension fund gets transferred into the PPF. That will be bad news for me as I will only get 90% of what I was guaranteed in the BT scheme.

WHSmith must be ok otherwise the Post Office work wouldn't have be given to them when they shut local Post Offices recently.

Good shout, their Irish subsidiary Xtravision has been in trouble for years and its main 'competitor' (they rarely covered the same areas) went in to admin a few months ago.

Some of you might remember when there were Xtravision branches in Britain, they've hit the wall TWICE already and eventually ended up as a subsidiary of Blockbuster.
