That pub in Ship Street is indeed where the Albion were formed.

Based on the success of any company that's ever sponsored us (Phoenix, British Caledonian etc.), guess they're doomed... not looking good for ITS (but thanks for the sponsorship)

WH smiths is the retail company, Smiths news is the wholesale and distribution company. They are two seperate entities since 2006 ? ish.

Dawson News aren't the biggest distributor, they are the smallest of the big three, Smiths news, Menzies and Dawsons. Dawsons tend to stick to the south (or south of manchester), Menzies are bigger in the north and scotland and Smiths cover the lot.

Oh, and just for completeness, the publishers hold the whip hand in that relationship - not the distributors

................carry on

very very wrong - the balance of power has been shifting over the last ten years. When retailers realised that they could not make publishers give ground on cover price they sought other ways to screw them. Hence the soft margin leverages with regards to promotional spend and listings. Don't argue with me on this one - it's been my career for the last 10 years.

PS - Dawsons are f***ed.

in line with the original e-mail...

Thorntons chocolates are going
WHS are in deep doo-doo but i think they'll be ok.
