Compact Digital Camera's - Whats The Best?

My Kodak camera died and is being laid to rest after 3 years service and thousands of great captures of the drunken nights out, various land marks around the world, and amazing sporting moments

Price range, upto £200 I guess

Whats the best make? and can anyone recommend any models of said make?

You can't go wrong with a Canon Ixus. Had three different versions and they are all great.

I recently got a Samsung PL50 which does up to 10.2 megapixels.
Great for shoot & snap while on the lash, but great for panoramic views as well. 199 squid with a bit extra for the warranty so you can exchange for a brand newie of any model if you break it; from Curry's by the way.

two things worth noting.

1. anything greater than 8mega pixels is pointless. Domestic printers have not yet been made that can cope with anything like that level of pixellation.

2. get a camera that has a traditional viewfinder AS WELL AS the LCD screen on the back. I didn't (got an olympus mju) and it's a pain whenever you want to take outside pictures on sunny days, and you just cannot see what you're taking without a proper 'put your eye up to it' viewfinder.

Have top disagree with your assessment there Safeway. I've got a Pentax Optio 43WR and I'm constantly disappointed with my night time photography efforts (sample below)



And no, switching it off and on again is no help at all. Though throwing it in the sea might work...

Yes don't go to Jessops' in Queen Street now.

They just laid off all their best staff over the last 2 weeks, just to save pension contributions I understand.

There used to be a friendly chick from Latvia there, sold me a Canon about 2 years ago and always helped afterwards with any problems.

Looks like you had the flash in slow synch mode, thats why they are see thru.

Yes agree with everything you said there, also you only get a cut down censor size with a compact so anything above 8 megapixels is a waste of time as they have to decrease the size the size of the pixels to get them on the censor.
