Missus has a panasonic lumix TZ5 (I think its the model number) Has 10x zoom and all the trimmings and takes cracking photos and was about £200.

THe 10x zoom is a must in my mind.

I have an SLR as my main camera so borrow hers when I can't take mine with me and it is not far off the quality I get out of my Pentax SLR

The Panasonic Lumix seem to lead the field right now.

If I was buying I'd go for the TZ7 if I had £250 to spend, or the TZ6 if not.

(Whatever you buy, please buy via Amazon from NSC - a £200 camera will earn us about £10-12)

Have top disagree with your assessment there Safeway. I've got a Pentax Optio 43WR and I'm constantly disappointed with my night time photography efforts (sample below)

And no, switching it off and on again is no help at all. Though throwing it in the sea might work...

I took a camera to canada a few years ago and had a couple of really great night time shots (including a coule that relied on that stretchy look).

I think night time pics need the camera to be absolutely still (I rested mine on a wall). Even with a steady hand there's slight movement as you press the button.

Absolutely. The quality of the lens and the size of the sensor on most digicams makes achieving decent low light shots very challenging indeed.

Like you - I'd place the camera on a solid object and then also use the camera's self-timer feature where you can in order to avoid the shake that a finger on the shutter button can cause.

Which are the ones that have Leica lenses in them? Apart from Leica's own make, obviously.
