Circumcision banned in Germany

I was circumcised as a baby as apparently I had no hole through which to pee.

Circumcision is still widespread as a tribal, right of passage thing. I am afraid that quite a number of teenagers die as a result of being taken off into the middle of nowhere and chopped by a tribal elder. It is also being promoted in Africa because apparently, there is a reduction in the risk of catching HIV if you are circumcised. Not as big a reduction as using a condom of course.

The only trouble with this debate is that the German government has announced that there will be no ban on circumcision.

As has been stated earlier, for Jews, circumcision has its beginnings in Genesis 17. The Eternal One speaks to Abraham & tells him to circumcise himself & the male members of his household, as the covenant between Me & you & your offspring to follow... every male among you shall be circumcised.

Although it is common practice today for Jews & non Jews (until recently, the majority of USA citizens born in the country were circumcised & the Royal family in the UK are), there is little evidence that circumcision serves any medical purpose.

What makes circumcision important to the Jewish faith, is the linking of a newly born to a 4000 year long history, a sign of the relationship between Jews & God.

To not circumcise one's son is to cut him off from the Jewish people, in Jewish law & symbolically.

In Jewish law on the 8th day the actual circumcision will be performed by a mohel. He is trained in the ritual of circumcision & modern surgical hygiene. The mohel will examine the baby to certify that he is healthy enough to undergo the procedure (unless a doctor has decided he cannot). If not, it is postponed till later.

The procedure itself is very brief & yes I was honoured to be present at my sons circumcision.

Over the centuries one form of anti Semitic persecution in Jewish history has been the prohibition of circumsion. Antiochus Epiphanes, the Greek king forbade it. So did the Roman emperors who governed Palestine in the second century BCE. The practice has survived not because it served a medical practice but because it was a mark, literally written on the flesh of all male Jews, of the covenant between God & Abraham.

In modern America, for instance, most hospitals routinely circumcise newborn boys of faith & without faith.

What's your response to the argument that a child should have a right to choose whether or not to be circumcised?

One of those issues that Germany should keep out of. I don't have a religious bone in my body but was circumcised as a baby because my father, grandfather, greatgrandfather, etc before me were. Being born 18 years after the liberation of the death camps I also happen to regard it as an affirmation of my existence and the defeat of the Nazis. If some people find that too melodramatic for their tastes, tough shit.

I agree with it, i feel there should be an age where a child should decide on what religion he wants to be in, i feel schools should teach them about every religion the good and the bad then the child decides if he wants to believe in it.

I dont like schools based on religions. I am not the most religious person in the world, i wish i was but i am not

Muslims have circumcision, too. (Or some of them do there was a story in the guardian about this earlier in the week that focused on a muslim couple from Turkey who had recently moved to Germany).

Though, admittedly, my mind first went to jews + german action "against them". But on thinking about it some more, aren't people who might defend the rights of jewish parents to circumcise their sons the same who talk about the female circumcision in some tribal cultures as barbaric?

Female "circumcision"is not the same as male. One involves cutting the foreskin the other is hacking the clitoris off. Two very different things.

Apparently circumcision lowers the sexual enjoyment for both the bloke & woman involved, due to decreased sensitivity in the man and increased friction in the woman.

Jewish women (and I presume Muslim women too) have lower levels of cervical cancer than the general population and I suggest you ask any women if they prefer a man who can take his time to one who fires his pistol at the start of the game.

Are you being serious, or are you sarcastically drawing parallels and showing how the different synonyms can make the same (or similar) thing sound worse?

It's also done for medical reasons. I had mine done because I'd developed two holes, and was peeing like a leaking colander. It works fine now, and my Mrs loves it.

I'm speaking from the experience of being circumcised and knowing that it is not harmful.

This is the reality of the female experience WHO | Female genital mutilation

Correct, and thats the anti-sexual religous motives for performing it. there is no other difference.

Total bollocks (no pun) if you are referring to men.

Female genital mutilation is entirely different and is illegal in the UK.
