Daily Star claims it's Port Vale.

Edit : The Port Vale chairman has now gone on record as saying it is not them.

He'd do himself a big favour if he stopped denying it and showed a bit of remorse.

He just isn't going to do that though while he is still trying to get the conviction overturned through official channels. Whatever you think about it, that is just a fact.

Until such time he remains a convicted rapist and we now face the Groundhog Day sequence of outrage from supporters groups, local politicians, possible sponsor objections, rape support groups...this is going to keep happening every time it crops up at a new club. He'd better really, really want to play again because to get there he's going to need the hide of a rhino, and a club with the same.

Sounds like Oldham need to be braced. Aren't they sponsored by Sports Direct? That could mean Mike Ashley being dragged into it as well...

Oldham have the advantage of having employed Lee Hughes after his conviction. Not sure they're ready for quite how much of a sh*tstorm they're in for however.

'Advantage' in the loosest possible sense...

I know nothing at all about the case. Of course we know that some convictions are wrong though. Is it not at all possible that he could be innocent?

why?

he is a convicted rapist

How comes when Lee Hughes scores we don't see 'Killer scores winning goal' or what about that keeper McCormick who caused the death of two brothers 'Child killer saves Penalty'. BBC and other news agencies are just fanning the flames as usual

When convicted criminals come out of prison, they cannot be persecuted for the rest of their lives - they have served the punishment time that has been given to them.

But he hasn't 'served' his punishment. He is out on license, having been sentenced to five years in 2012. His conviction will not be spent until 2017.

So yes, he should be referred to as 'Convicted Rapist, Ched Evans'.

Convictions of four years or more are never spent.

How long will my conviction stay on record?

7. I have one prison sentence of over 4 years
You only have to tell if asked. If you have a prison sentence of over 4 years you currently always have to declare if asked as your conviction is never spent.

Applying for a job which involves a DBS check? DBS checks show all convictions whether spent or unspent so you will always have to declare in this instance.

Because that would be over the top, pointing out he is a rapist and about to sign for another club is fair enough.

oddly Oldham signed Hughes.

You mean, such as

Drink-drive killer Luke McCormick made CAPTAIN of Plymouth Argyle FC or Drink drive killer goalkeeper Luke McCormick joins Swindon?

Lee Hughes out of jail and all set to play or Crash killer Lee Hughes: I'm sorry?

There was a fuss with past cases, there were the headlines. People just seem to have forgotten it because they weren't necessarily discussing it on messageboards at the time.

Possibly also because both of those players have since expressed great remorse, regardless of how unacceptable their actions were at the time.

Perhaps he will if his appeal is rejected until then he has to maintain a degree of non committal, probably on legal advice. So that aspect of the situation should not be held or used against him.

Indeed. Society is much more forgiving of convicted criminals who acknowledge their crimes and try to atone for them, earn their place back into society rather than strut out of jail, organising (or allowing the organisation in their name of) a campaign to bad mouth their victim and silently sits back while their supporters threaten people with similar crimes in their name.

In fact it seems that of those that are opposed to Evans returning right now, the overwhelming majority would greatly soften their stance and allow him the chance to build as normal a life as he can, if only he showed some contrition.

While, as has been noted before, his current appeal would prevent him necessarily admitting to rape, there is so much more he could do that would curry favour. Not limited to having made a statement condemning the threats against Jessica Ennis-Hill and Charlie Webster, calling on his supporters not to hound the woman he has been found guilty of raping out of her home, forcing her to change her identity for her own safety, showing an understanding of the position his case puts clubs and people in.

It is most obvious whether he wants to or not he cannot show any remorse as it will be seen as an admission of guilt by the prosecutors. This is now getting boring the continued repeating of views for and against.

It is most obvious this excuse is being over used as a crutch for everything. It doesn't take remorse to tell people not to abuse Ennis-Hill, or to tell his supporters to let the justice system and appeals system run its course and to stop hounding the girl. It doesn't take remorse to acknowledge the special circumstances around his attempted return to work while appealing a conviction.

He may not be able to say "I'm sorry for raping her", but that doesn't mean he can't show greater remorse than just for cheating on his girlfriend. It doesn't mean his lack of contrition should be ignored when drawing parallels to previous cases. It doesn't mean there isn't room for other actions/statements that would make people more sympathetic/willing to give him a second chance.

As you well know Edna, he is hardly likely to express remorse all the time he is seeking an appeal.

What he did was despicable but he has served his time and should be allowed to move on which is the basis of our law. There is nothing in the law that says you cannot have a high profile role once you have served your time unless you also express remorse.
