Last night, I came within a whisker of installing a bolt-on that would enable users to change their own username if they wished.

Currently they need to get in touch with one of the powers-that-be and it is, if I'm honest, a pain in the arse.

Things to note:

- We can configure it so that a user can only change their username once every X days, where X can be whatever we like. So, for example, we could set it so that you can only change your username once a quarter.

- Every user will have a 'username history' in their profile so others can view what others names they were known by and when.

However, I like to pretend that you, the users, have a say in this so I'll ask what you think - should I add it to the site?

Nah.

It's open to abuse.

:)

Make your mind up

I have changed my username twice in the 7 and a half years of using the modern NSC

The first time I changed it because the first username I had I made when I was 14 years old and was rather pointless, the second time I needed to change it because it had unusual characters which made it hard for me to log in with my smart phone.

So yeah, may as well if it makes the mods jobs easier. Although rather than every quarter it should be once a year (why would anyone need to change more than that?)
I've just changed mine TWICE in eight minutes.

I think only seagullsovergrimsby noticed.

Can't be arsed to read all the responses... Yes I have slightly altered my username but only to remove the seagull bit...

I would just like to ask... Why is it a pain in the arse for people to change their username? I guess some may not want be recognised because they've been twats in the past and want a fresh start or, are you getting to many requests from members because they didn't think before they signed up?

Because it's a manual exercise that takes up a few minutes I could use doing something else.

Maybe I should just install it for a week, allowing everyone to make 1 and only 1 change, if they want, and then disable it again.

Perhaps a "pre event" advert, say running for a period of 1 month prior to the facility launch, just so as many can get to use if needed, especially overseas followers and those that work funny/long/forever(moderator's) hours don't miss out.

I'm half tempted to spell my name in a better way:
8Ace
8 Ace
8 ACE
EightAce
Eight Ace
EIGHT ACE
EightAce149

But I like it how it is :moo:
