Last night, I came within a whisker of installing a bolt-on that would enable users to change their own username if they wished.

Currently they need to get in touch with one of the powers-that-be and it is, if I'm honest, a pain in the arse.

Things to note:

- We can configure it so that a user can only change their username once every X days, where X can be whatever we like. So, for example, we could set it so that you can only change your username once a quarter.

- Every user will have a 'username history' in their profile so others can view what others names they were known by and when.

However, I like to pretend that you, the users, have a say in this so I'll ask what you think - should I add it to the site?

With those two things to note (particularly the time limit), yes.

If it could appear in some small font on every post (e.g. previous name as a "sub-title" or whatever you call the bit where Bozza's posts say "You can change this") even better.

Once a year - just in case anyone is sad enough to incorporate their age in it.

on the topic of change. How do you change your footer? and sub heading under your user name? and the picture as well?

I'd like to say yes, purely as my username is a name I've been called here, and in the real world for years which is fine. However, now we have signed Lua Lua getting notifcations of mentioned about me bleachng my hair, speeding down the wing etc is a tad irksome. So yes would love to be able to change my username, would be happy just to do it once though

I'm saying Yes ..but guessing that those who are happy with their current username (or surname) will not use it and those who would like to change it but don't know how or can't be arsed to will welcome it :)

Cheshire Cat

The most curious thing..
Yes, so long as you can't ever have more than one person with the same user name.

Although I have no intention of ever changing mine.

I think yes - I set up my user name when I was new to 'message boards' not really thinking it through - It's too easy to identify who I am and I'm concious of certain things that would get me into trouble if I revealed...

Meh...I'd say no- if you want to put off people requesting it from Mods just make it clear that there is a £5 admin charge or something to help pay the bills as well.

Right here, right now
As long as people can't change it to a username someone else has previously used!

No, It'd be abused just like the anti nsk spat you'd have people changing names to Dr.umstick etc and messing around, It'd also allow people to act even more dickish and then just change their name. At least this way you tend to have a 'personality' and may not want to screw it up being a dick such as transfer rumours etc.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

If it is a chore could it be set up that all users can change their username once say every 10 years, so in effect once? That'll allow those who want to change it for some reason (real name and the like) but not let people act silly.
