You have sold out (for reasons best known to yourself) I'd like to be able to point out to my kids in years to come, that the number plate on the mayor's limo was the first ever issued in our town.

You can still point it out. It'll just be on some millionaire's Bentley in Norfolk. What difference does it make whose car it's on?

I'm with Tim on this one. CD1 belongs to Brighton, I'm not outraged or anything like that, but saddened that a part of Brighton's heritage is being flogged off.

Essex County Council sold the registration of their Chairman's limo (F1) for £440,625. The same history as CD1 - the first ever registration issued by the council.

As it happens, I've sat in F1 and been driven around in CD1.

You can qualify it all you like, saying "it's only a number plate". I expect you all said something similar when Archer and his cronies sold my towns football ground, because they wanted the money.

For all you non Brightonians CD1 was the first plate issued in Brighton way back in 1904.

I'm born and bred in Brighton and I've never heard of this. And now that I have heard about it, I still couldn't care less.

My children are Brightonians one born at the RSCH the other here at home. It will be part of their heritage.

Anyway I asked for peoples thoughts. If people think it should be sold then fair enough. Personally I think it is a sad reflection on how people perceive the history and heritage of the town they live in.

I wonder how much the pylons are worth?

I'd rather some essential service for children not so lucky as yours was saved than keep the number plate personally.

Bit surprised at this. Pretty common knowledge. Maybe more for us older ones who have lived with it for the whole of our lives and consider it as a bit of our local history. Whilst I am not overimpressed with its sale (it is a form of selling off another asset that will be irrecoverable), if was spent on subsidising local sports pitches and grounds I wouldn't mind. The council seem to have forgotten that kids and adults need sporting facilities at reasonable cost. These have been going up at an alarming rate and impacting on old and young alike.

Good grief.

Do you reckon the current administration are pocketing the proceeds?

I bet most people in Brighton & Hove didn't even know about the CD1 numberplate until some gimp complained to the Argus.

I'm sorry, as much as I hate the Greens, I really don't see how a car number plate that is shifted from one anonymous council wagon to the next is worth preserving. What does it provide? Interest, tourism, notoriety, community spirit?
