Brighton - In your face
It's the significance isn't it. The first ever licence plate issued in Brighton, now proudly adorns the mayors limo.

God knows where the first ever pencil sharpener is.
Or the first bagel sold by the bagelman.
Or the first shot of sambuka poured.

There is no significance really is there. £160,000? There's got to be someone stupid out there.

erm, yes, i think the significance is pretty astounding myself,
surely way higher in local significance than the pavillion, the lanes and the piers, judging by peoples reactions on here....???

End of an era, but it just depends what the 160K gets spent on. If it was something worthy like towards a kids playground then yes it
would be good but if it is just to be spent on the Greens loony traffic changes on Lewes Road then that would be sad.

Oh no, not again.

How many more times do people have to be told that the Lewes Road improvements are being paid for by central government, not Council coffers?

A friggin number plate? Sweet jesus, talk about false outrage.

Cringeworthy isn't it?

This meaningless grizzling has nothing to do with *cough* heritage and pride, and everything to do with political grandstanding. In other words, the Daily Mail readers are only pretending to be outraged because it's the Greens doing this.

If Tiddles thinks it's an outrage, then the reality is it's probably a pretty good idea.

Nothing to see, move along.

Agreed but central government money is still our money and it really is a loony idea.

It's a good idea, it's wanted by the locals - and you're pretending to be outraged because it's the Greens, irrespective of the fact that it's got cross-party support.

Your faux-outrage is not fooling anyone.

Nothing to do with it being Green ( with a capita G ). It's still an absolute daft idea to bring the main traffic down to one lane each way - watch the air pollution shoot upwards. The longer traffic takes to travel the distance and the more standing still there is the more air pollution there will be. People will still use their cars regardless. Thankfully I don't live over there.

EDIT - I'd be equally against it if Labour, the Tories or UKIP had suggested it.

That's if people use their cars regardless. I'd like to think the improvement in buses/bikes on the route will produce a change that's needed. I guess we'll see :)

You have sold out (for reasons best known to yourself) I'd like to be able to point out to my kids in years to come, that the number plate on the mayor's limo was the first ever issued in our town.

Is the level of "interesting" things you want to point out to you children. ???
Your living in the past, the mayor's car is no longer a limo.

My children are Brightonians one born at the RSCH the other here at home. It will be part of their heritage.

Anyway I asked for peoples thoughts. If people think it should be sold then fair enough. Personally I think it is a sad reflection on how people perceive the history and heritage of the town they live in.

I wonder how much the pylons are worth?

Indeed, and until the new format was introduced *CD on a car reg meant that it was originally registered in Brighton, *NJ and *YJ also signify a Brighton registered car.

YJ was a number plate for a car first registered in Dundee. NJ was East Sussex. PM, PN and PO were also Sussex, as was BP and a handful of others. I used to enjoy looking out for them at away matches.

Interesting registration numbers can of course be traded and so it is probable that a car with an eyecatching plate doesn't come from where the letters suggest. BHA, for example, denotes a car from Warley.

CD1 is a proud exception; the first town registration. What was Harold Macmillan's phrase? "Selling the family silver" or somesuch. The council will soon blow the proceeds and a nice bit of historic ephemera will be gone for ever.
