Why not? He's a good shot-stopper (you know, the sort of GK that turns in a match-winning/drawing performance against us week after week, but may well be rubbish with their feet) but probably isn't a good enough sweeper for us. Are Barcelona still 'looking at' him?

....all of which makes his lack of starting selection for the England U-21s even more bizarre.

Rushworth was named in a matchday squad for "meaningful" England U-21 matches on 13 occasions during 2021-22 and 2022-23 (by "meaningful" I include competitive matches, or friendlies played at actual football grounds). On 10 occasions James Trafford started and on 3 occasions Josef Bursik started. Rushworth was named as a sub on each occasion but didn't see a minute of playing time. (Bursik is now at Club Brugge but hasn't featured for the first team).

Rushworth's only cap was when he started (and played the first half only) of a behind-closed-doors friendly against Japan at St George's Park in the lead-up to the European Championship finals in Georgia. It was a glorified training session; I didn't even know it had been played until months afterwards (although the FA decided to award caps to the participants).

Surely the coaching staff at U-21 level should have given him SOME meaningful minutes during those 13 opportunities (plus 4 other occasions when he was named in the overall squad but not included in the matchday squad)?

The fact Rushworth never got a game in a friendly or when qualification etc was secure was always a puzzler. Trafford was great for the U21s but it appears we threw all our eggs in his basket and got lucky he didn’t get injured or suspended.

Would appear working with the England goalkeeper coach week in week out at Swansea will have given his chances of a senior call up a boost. Won’t hurt him to have a coach who knows him very well as one of Southgate’s trusted lieutenants.

You'd hope Rushworth will be given his chance here soon, though maybe next season another loan at a newly promoted PL team like Ipswich etc may be a good next step?

I read Luke Williams is super keen to get him back at Swansea and not surprising with those reports, but at 22 and with Bart just 21 and already playing PL I hope we move him up another rung of the ladder competively.

As for warming bench for Waistcoat, can only add to his value and improve him being around the PL keepers and coaches.

Trouble with the GK position is that if we bring him back into the squad then whomever gets the nod, Bart or Rushworth, we end up with a highly promising young keeper warming the bench, and that’s no good for development.

I said at the time. When RDZ picked Steele and the club then signed Vebruggen, it wasn't just a setback for Sanchez, but had repurcussions for all our junior keepers. Rushworth, Scherpen and possibly Beadle may need to keep themselves in the shop window to progress.

It would be a fantastic achievement for him but wouldn't Dean Henderson be the more likely choice? He's got top flight experience, is playing week in week out and has been in Southgate's squads before.

As for next season, yes it'll be interesting to see how it shakes out with both Rushworth and Beadle currently on loan in the championship. I think we can get away with a full season loan to the championship for Beadle but I'm not sure if another season in the champ will be that beneficial for Rushworth. Maybe he will go on loan to a foreign league?

If he stays then presumably Mc Gill would be the one to make way but it'd obviously leave us with a very promising keeper competing for game time against two players who have been playing regularly all this season.　If 2 into 1 doesn't go then 3 into 1 definitely doesn't.

So what can we do?

I don't think Steele is a particularly brilliant all round keeper but since he's come into the team it;s become clear what a fantastic person he is and incredible asset to the squad. I don't want to lose him from the club but now he's had a decent taste of top flight and European football is he really going to be happy dropping to third choice?

Rushworth needs game time to continue developing so him being third choice and getting no game time doesn't seem like a positiv developmental step so he'd have to be at least second choice so he can get some games.

Ver Bruggen is the seemingly de facto number one now but like Rushworth he's very young. He also needs game time as he is quite far from the finished article. It would be a massive retrograde step for his development and position in the club if he was dropped to number two now.

I think the best case scenario is that Rushworth goes out on loan to another top European league and VB stays as first choice. Both have great seasons and then in 12 months we can sell one and keep the other while putting Beadle out on a top European loan.

Not if rumoured interest in BV from Bayern is true. Rushworth would just be the next train at the platform if they offered £50m for BV and further vindication of the ‘project’ and its merits.

Bayern maybe - but £50M? No chance! If we could recoup what we spent, or even make a small profit, in order to clear our decks of surplus first team keepers, that would be a good deal.
