I think you're harsh in saying we have twenty thousand new fans. There are loads who like myself went to a few Withdean games a year and a few away but have been drawn to the Amex as it's a fantastic venue and actually worth talking our kids to. I know lots of people in that situation. Returning fans yes but new, no.

And the change to seagulls from dolphins, dolphins was never popular and seagulls came from the fans!
Agree with this. Well said.

That's true, but the name change from 'Dolphins' to 'Seagulls' came from the fans. It wasn't a marketing exercise or a new owner trying to bring in a new brand.

But the short term change to the Dolphins WAS a rebranding exercise by Mike Bamber who wrestled control over marketing from the then supporters' club. The good news was that fans prevailed in this instance because we hated the Dolphins tag and got what WE wanted. bamber saw the error of his way and we ended up with something the fans wanted. At the end of the day, it is up to the fans the name and colours they want to adopt in supporting their team.

Another 'branding' change Bamber introduced was dropping GOSBTS as the intro music and replacing it with some 1970s disco tune. That too was overturned by fan power as we all used to boo when the team ran out! Some time in the mid 1980s we also played in red shirts even when there was no color clash as for one FA Cup run they were deemed to be our 'lucky' shirts. And of course we managed to get rid of Archer's hated 'shield' badge and replaced it with a 'traditional' round badge - which itself replaced the 'twin towns' badge as part of the 'seagulls' re-branding exercise!

The difference of opinion seems to be that some view the changes at Cardiff to be on a par with the ones we've had: just a bit of minor internal rebranding that all clubs have done as a small price that was paid in order to attract new money to the club (and can be overturned by fan power); whereas others see it as symptomatic of the problems facing football: money is everything and Cardiff is yet another example of a foreign businessman seeing a British football club as a chance to make some money. And it will all end in tears.

Time will tell which of us is right. Certainly if Tony Bloom changed our strip to red and renamed the club the Sussex Sabres in return for a massive sponsorship deal I would be upset but I'd accept - because it's Tony Bloom and I believe he has the best interests of the club at heart. (And because he's a lifelong Albion fan he probably wouldn't do it!) However if a new foreign owner came in and wanted to do the same thing I'd be opposed as I wouldn't trust them, certainly not with the current 'rules' on foreign owners in place.

As I said, time will tell.

Thank God, I was feeling lonely.

I think you are far from lonely, I feel the same a real dilema and I suspect there are quite a few of us with the same feelings.

My little bit of hope is the likes of Swansea, West Brom and Norwich seem to have mastered the balance.

Isn't there already a Cardiff Dragons?
Thought it was the name of the rugby club after the whole of Rugby rebranded itself a few years ago?
They might have something to say about having simeone nick their name.............
It's Newport Gwent Dragons that you are thinking about.

Such controversy about this name was mainly focused on the inclusion of the words "Newport" and "Gwent" in the name. Newport folk didn't want the "Gwent" bit and Ebbw Vale folk didn't like the "Newport" bit. The "Dragons" element was acceptable, provided people were content with the concept of stronger regional rugby, as a means of strengthening the national game.

Newport RFC and Ebbw Vale RFC were the original main feeder clubs serving the Dragons. Both clubs survive as independent rugby clubs to this day and Newport RFC share Rodney Parade with the Dragons (and, since the start of this season, with Newport County FC).

Personally, I'm sorry to see the decline of town-based rugby in Wales, since the glorious days of my childhood when Newport RFC were capable of beating a full-strength Australian side without back-up from up the valleys. In the words of Max Boyce, "I was there".

When Sussex's one day side got rebranded as the Sharks it didn't bother me at all.
I quite like it in fact.

I'm actually OK with this. Cardiff have not rebranded just for the sake of it, but have tapped into the mutual significance of the colour red and the symbol of the dragon for both the Welsh and Far Eastern people. This opens doors that otherwise would be closed to the club.

And it's not as if the blue shirt has gone forever - it's their away kit and they play the same amount of games away as home.

I was under the impression the shit shield badge was designed personally by DK??

Incidentally today would be a good day to push through the name change and pseudo Liverpool dragon crest for Cardiff...being St David's day

...
That's the story that was put out, but actually it was Archer's final kick in the balls for us. We'd lost the Goldstone and he wanted to make sure that as many links to the old club were destroyed as possible, hence as part of the negotiations he produced that shit badge (you don't think a savvy adman like DK would have come up with that abomination do you?) and told Knight he had to adopt it or the deal was off.

Historians please note: That above paragraph is complete bollocks, but it's how I like to think it happened! I believe it WAS DK that introduced it as a 'break with the past' - as if losing the Goldstone wasn't a big enough break.

What was the crappy disco tune Brovian mentions that the players briefly ran out to in the 70's? I remember that, but not what it was.

"Gonna fly now" was the theme from rocky. Bit like the gladiators entering the arena that was the goldstone. Good title or seagulls.

I didn't know anything about this but I did think just last week I wonder if Cardiff adopt "Dragons" as it kind of makes them "the" Welsh team. Personally I think they should stay Cardiff City but have a Dragon in their badge. Teams do rebrand from time to time, I think there was a club that used to be called the Dolphins but I can't quite remember what they changed to.
