Dullsville ! The only problem with a computer degree is that the technology you learn on tends to be out of date. You need to try and get some work experience (I've been in IT for over thirty eight years).

I think that's always been the case with IT. Anyway, they don't know they've been born nowadays - tweaking an autoexec.bat and config.sys to get an extra few kb's - now that's a real skill

somewhere in Eastbourne
I was born in the wrong time.
left school at 16 and got an apprenticeship as a contract electrician the money was awful and always has been until recently but I managed to get through even with a mortgage to pay and have had a go at just about everything to pay my way.
this aside my suggestion would be forget university train to become a plumber or electrician or even a motor mechanic all of which I would consider essential trades become good at what you do charge huge call out fee's and hourly rates, become well off and send your kids to universities thats if there any left and always be sure you have good medical insurance then you and yours can swerve the good old NHS thats if its still around.
Oh and buy a house somewhere like Bermuda so you are well away from the daily grind and only have to take calls from your managers of your business.

Whhhaaatttttt ? There was no such thing in my youth ! Try wiring a collator panel to get the correct sort order as your CPU was too dumb to sort a file ! Talk about JCLs  !

Bit of a joke actually, one of my nephews has a boss he sat next to at school. Unlike him his 'boss' left at 16 but now is heading up the company's New York office. Not typical I know but clearly a university education isn't all that.

Explain to me how buying a University place for £28,000 will free up extra places for those who ''really need it''.

In short it doesn't.

the university places and their funding are allocated by quota's. so if someone pays for an extra place, thats one spare for state funding. but lets not worry about the pro's and con's of the idea, the debate has been killed off instantly.

Perhaps the UK should adopt the German system of apprenticeships for 18/19 year olds, but for that to occur you need a greater proportion of the economy based on manufacturing,...

why can apprenticeships only be available in manufacturing? why not have them in programming, marketing, hotel management?
