Sadly that's what happens when you have a situation where there is no competition for services :(

Exactly. They have a monopoly to the extent that when a competitor does try to enter the market such as the Big Lemon, they are muscled out by Brighton & Hove Buses suddenly running special promotions on that route.

Also, tax payers money is lavished on bus lanes making Brighton & Hove Bus companys operations much more effcient. This should result in lower fares. All those bus lanes only serve to fill the pockets of Brighton & Hove Bus company even more - why are the savings not passed back to customers?

How many other private companies have the council subsidising them?

Apart from the cost, given the choice bus travel during the morning / afternoon rush hour or sticking a blunt object up my japs eye - I'd choose the latter every time.

Brighton Buses which used to be Brighton Corporation when it was owned municipally was flogged off as a management buyout to save the council money. Brighton Buses were struggling financially and was bought by B&H Buses . The only other competition B&H Buses had was from Stagecoach Southcoast on former Southdown routes but these have now disappeared since B&H Buses acquired Stagecoach's interests on those few routes.

Exactly the same happened with another competitor (Blue Triangle ?) when it set up a rival service along the A259 between Brighton and Newhaven , the fares were reduced and the timings rescheduled until that operator went bust and then the fare returned to the previous price.

Just checked out these supposedly bargain 'short hop' £1 fares. What a joke. Hove Town Hall to Palmeira Square? That's about a three minute walk. Anyone that can't manage that probably has something wrong with them, and as such doesn't really deserve to be thoroughly ripped off for a two stop bus ride.

Roger French's profiteering prats... :shit:

Hercules, it's pretty much the same in Dover. Brighton buses may have their faults but are fairly good on the whole.

Mind you, like Mendoza, I have heard from various people, including Krispies, that driving and parking to Churchill Square is cheaper and more convenient than the bus.

has someone said, that most of our european breathen benefit from state controlled and cheaper and more efficient public transport

And as I said, I'm not disagreeing with you that Brighton buses come very often. 5 or 7 minutes - great, I can believe that. I don't get them, but I used to and I know people who do, and regularity is not a problem. Price is the problem, and your reply says nothing about why Brighton bus prices are so disgustingly high.

They're not though. They only seem expensive because they used to be stupidly cheap.

Just been in town had a few drinks, last bus home from preston street to my house, £1.80. Cheaper than a drink, can not complain whatsoever.

Am I the only person who loves the buses in and around Brighton. I would never entertain taking my car into Brighton as it is far cheaper to jump on the no 40 in Haywards Heath to Churchill then 49 to Aldi in Portslade or get off in London Rd and jump on the 5B to Asda. Buses every few minutes what more could you want other than the fact that the No 40 is usually very busy.

Oh I forgot to say that I am over 60 so it means a free bus pass for me and the vast majority that travel from HH or BH to Brighton.

Rudgwick to either Horsham or Cranleigh (5-6 miles) is £5.70 with the wonderful Arriva - an hourly service that finishes at 6pm (so you can't commute from Horsham station unless you're prepared to walk home). Every two hours on a Sunday but the last bus from Horham is around 8pm - utterly bizarre.

Is that not a runabout ticket that you can use to Guildford? My grandson (under14) can get a return ticket from Guildford to Horsham for £1.80, I think it is. This same ticket would take him on an Arriva but from outside of Guildford near Slyfield to the centre and then on to Horsham but only if he uses Arrive buses. The problem he has is that if he uses the other company Safeguard? it costs him 1.20 to get from his home to Guildford Bus Station and the Arriva buses do not run to connect with each other. For him to get home from Horsham on a Sunday is horrendous, virtually impossible, as he has to change at Cranleigh and wait about 50 mins as again they do not connect.

The park and ride scheme is being stopped in April now, so we may game som SATURDAY home games in December this year (next season)

I thought Park and ride schemes were encouraged nationwide, yet we are getting rid of our only ones, there is not much parking in town when the multi stories get full, so we could be in for some fun this summer

Still going to be used to park cars though, and the 27 is being increased to 15 min intervals from 30 min intervals. The only change is going to be the loss of £100,000 subsidy to B&H buses from the council. Cue another increase in general fares :(
