Cheaper to take the car, even at 80p per 15 minutes.

Two of you into town, park at the NCP for two hours = £6.40 plus say 50p petrol = £6.90

Two of you on the bus = £7.20 - plus you are at the mercy of the bus times, being beaten up etc.

That 30p buys you a copy of The Sun

I think it is totally staggering that I have to pay 1.80 to go from Hove to Brighton by bus.

WRT to dropping the fuel increase he imposed a while back Mr French has come up with the usual line about how they buy their fuel in advance. He claims he bought a year's worth of gas. I am willing to bet that when the year is up (he failed to mention the exact date he bought the juice) he will find some other reason as to why he should not only drop the price but hike it north again....or keep his fingers crossed we have all got used to the price and forgotten.

Can anyone tell me what profits his company made last year?

Also, can anyone tell me when their contract is up? Something has to be done as the charges are rediculous and they seem to be able to charge what they want.

I am a huge advocate of public transport but I struggle to sell it to anyone these days.

The fuel is paid for in advance at a set price and the price is factored in , when the cost of fuel goes down it just extends the date of the new fare increases. B&H buses are part of the Go Ahead group and as such this subsidiary turns over a tasty profit. Their "contract" is basically continuous as another company would need to compete on the same routes in order to take over from the present incumbent. In 2008 they have replaced older vehicles with new buses , 15 single deckers (8 are second hand from Metrobus) and 7 double deckers which has cost a small fortune.

Isn't the Oyster card being replaced as the company running the system lost out in the tendering process for the new contract ? Whoever takes over will use the current system but it will be called something else and the cards will be replaced over a period of time whilst it is being re-branded.

you may be right, nevertheless the principle is excellent, though to stop the free leggers I would enforce, that everyone must register their card as they enter a bus, especially the extended buses.

And of course London has for years provided free travel for over 60's and now for under 16's and people on benefits.

i would like to see that enforced too. unfortunately the resources required to do that are currently tied up in afghanistan and iraq.

If they want bums on seats then all they need to do is say its a quid ANYWHERE. 1.80 per return. They would be heaving again, like they used to be. Absolute morons

Boris is getting rid of the bendys mainly because he thinks they are unsafe on the capital's roads and adding to congestion. This will stop all those who travel for free by getting on via the middle and back doors. Do many people actually pay cash fares up in London nowadays (apart from the Heritage routes) ? it either seems to be prepayment by Oyster card or buying a ticket from the machine at the bus stop or entitlement to free travel.

I don't think all are going, we have more of them passing thru our areas than most parts of London, you really can spot the spongers and the tales of people jumping ship when an inspector gets on are legendary.

The 149 route basically goes down a A10, its a long straight road, which used to handle trams, the buses have really improved the service and are grreat for people like us with buggies (thery can take 5 or 6 ) instead of 1!and of course wheelchairs.

I actually like them for this reason. But the bunking fares pisses me really off.

I use my Oyster every time I am up in London.

I watch these freeloaders jump on the back. So just the once I tried it without touching my Oyster. As I jumped on the back I heard the machine bleep. My bloody Oyster had contacted the machine through my pocket and charged me!!! Still at least I could travel without the threat of an inspector accosting me! I assume the freeloaders don't even have Oyster Cards!

I was in Brussels at the weekend

It cost me Euros 4.50 for a travel card for both me and my girlfriend. We could go on any metro, bus and train for the whole day.

It then cost £20.16 for a single from London Victoria to Brighton on Sunday night, having used my osyter card from St Pancras to Victoria as FCC wasnt running from St Pancras that day

Getting rid of the bendys was one of many election pledges that Boris made. The routes will switch over to double deckers starting with the 38 in Autumn 2009 , single deckers on the 507 and 521 (also late 2009) with the rest gradually phased in when they come up for re-tendering.

It is good, I dont know if the bar ran out, as it was all free, the trolley dollys kept bringing it to our table, so went for the champers instead, it was nice addition to set off my 3 course meal.

As for Brighton buses, they dont turn up on time more than half the time, the eletrocnic screens are rubbish and are not accurate, the drivers threaten to go on strike every 6 weeks, yet they still feel the need to put the prices up, even though the fuel prices are coming down and will fall even further.

I didnt realise it was CHEAPER to go by car and park - that says exactly what is wrong with this bus company

Ahh, I take it you was there for a "buisness trip" ?

As for Brighton buses, what a load of SHITE. Absolutly SHITE. Can't stand them, there NEVER on time, and even with my BUS ID + It still costs me 90p:censored:.

When i go into town now, I get the train, London Road Station > Brighton Station. ( 1. It's cheaper. 2. It's more reliable. 3. You get a table:cool:. 4. It's cheaper.)..£1.20 return from LDN Road STN to BTN station. The same journey would cost me 60p more on the bus, and would take twice aslong.

Forza Trains.
