British songstresses

Good call re: Kate Rusby and June Tabor. Haven't heard any Anne Briggs stuff but I trust your judgement on that.

How about Annie Haslam from Renaissance?

:clap:

Probably the most technically brilliant vocalist ever to come out of this country.
Having seen them live, several times, it was astounding to watch this little blonde with such a powerful and controlled soaring voice, holding notes for ages without a waver. Every song was a 'rock opera'!
Great band too.

Kate Jackson, frontwoman of The Long Blondes

Sonya Madan, Echobelly

Miki Berenyi, singer with Lush, although she has non-British parents, she was born and bred in London, so I'm counting her

Elizabeth Frazer, Lisa Gerrard, Kirsty (rip), Sarah Cracknell- chatted to her once, lovely lady. Listened to So Tough only yesterday- how British sounding an album is that?

Re; Lisa Gerrard - as much as I like the music of Dead Can Dance, her vocals grate on me. Brendan's voice is like Jim Morrison, and their 'internationally cultivated' music is sublime.

The first time I saw them was surreal - a lot of goths mixing with fur-coat Beverly Hills hoity toities, all giving each other shocked and disdainful looks :ohmy: ??? :eek:

The performance worked for everyone there though, oddly enough.

I mentioned Lulu at the start of the thread, and I'm sure that woulda been dismissed by many, but she really could belt out a tune, or deliver a silky ballad.

Not a great vid but listen to here here;
